64 parents attended the STEPS (parenting) program and gained knowledge and understanding of effective parenting and money management practices.
11 youth and adults attended 3 training sessions in preparation for the Annual Youth and Adult Expo held at Southern University. Two participants won 1st place in illustrated talk portraying “The Importance of Breakfast.”
A combined total of 320 youth attended East and West Carroll’s Safety Day Camps increasing their knowledge of healthy eating habits and physical activities through My Pyramid.
Agent and Nutrition Educators distributed nutrition information at a display at the Council on Aging Health Fair where 110 participants gained knowledge to improve eating habits for better health.
Over 1,200 clients received fact sheets and learned the importance of healthy eating habits, physical activity, food safety practices and budgeting food dollars at group meetings, home visits and individual one to one contacts, commodity sites, Health Units, Food for Seniors, Office of Family Services and Council on Aging.
FFNEWS
Distributed more than 400 each of Nutrition Nibbles educational fact sheets on the Importance of Vegetables, Calcium and My Pyramid Fruits during Senior Food Distribution and/or during the food distribution for the Louisiana Center Against Poverty.
Performed food demonstrations for and planted more than 150 vegetable seeds with clients at Council on Aging, Lake Providence Living Center and Delta Head Start. These clients learned how important vegetables are to a healthy eating plan.
Agriculture & Natural Resources
The rising Mississippi River caused serious flooding of farmland. Agent Donna Lee toured some of the flooded areas and took the below photos of the work being done by the Fifth District Levee Board to prevent the levee from breaking. A special thanks for their hard work.
Corn and Soybean Variety Trials, Rice Verification Fields, Cotton Flex Trials and Corn Borer Traps have been implemented in the parish for the upcoming growing season and are available to all producers in the parish as learning tools.
Two homeowners learned Lawn Care and Weed Control at the first of a series of monthly Home Garden Lunch and Learn workshops conducted by Agent Lee at the East Carroll Parish Library.
Agent Lee was the guest speaker at Delta Nursery and Design in Tallulah June 6 with 10 homeowners learning the latest in Home Lawn Care and Weed Control.
25 citizens learned how to produce vegetables for home consumption using containers and other small spaces.
251 youth and adults learned basic storm and home fire safety at East Carroll’s Safety Day Camp. Participants also learned how to properly exit burning buildings while protecting themselves and their families from smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Agent Glenn Dixon helped numerous local citizens make lawn and garden purchases by answering questions in Wal-Mart.
Agent Dixon helped with East Carroll Parish 4-H’s Healthy Lifestyles Field Day/Centennial Celebration where 184 participants went home with increased knowledge of eating and drinking healthily and exercising more.
Community Rural Development
Conducted board training for the Louisiana Association of Cooperatives. This association consists of approximately eight cooperatives throughout the state.
30 youth increased their knowledge of what employers look for in employees. Youth attending participated in a local summer work program.
22 local leaders became familiar with new approaches to transforming local communities.
4-H Youth Development
184 4-H members became more knowledgeable of their healthy lifestyle choices by visiting these different exhibits at East Carroll Parish 4-H’s Healthy Lifestyles Field Day/Centennial Celebration: Height, Weight & BMI; Grab Healthy Snacks; Healthy Food Choices; Line Dancing; M.O.V.E.; Pyramid Relay; Rethink Your Drink; Using Your Noodle; and Water—Drink It Up.
164 5th grade students participated in the Progressive Safety Day Camp and became more aware of safety issues on eating healthy, gas safety, first aid, working with grain safety, firearm safety, lawnmower safety, storm safety and the use of a compass and GPS.
15 4-H’ers attended 4-H Day at the Capitol where they visited the State’s Capitol and became more knowledgeable about the legislative process and they met State Representative Samuel P. Little.
19 4-H’ers attended 4-H U and competed in different contests where they learned about team building, nutrition, automotive, goods and services and nutrition illustrated talks. 14 4-H’ers won a blue ribbon in their respective contest.
