The Louisiana State Fair Livestock Show will be held Thursday, October 22 through Sunday, November 7. 4-H'ers from Evangeline will be competing for champion honors and also for all expense paid trips to the North American International Livestock Exhibition in Louisville, Kentucky.
PARISH BROILER SHOW
Broiler Show will be held in conjunction with the Parish Livestock Show on Friday, January 22, 2010. This is a great project for 4-H club members that do not have space for a calf, lamb, or pig. A broiler is a specialized chicken which grows very fast. In the broiler project, 4-H club members are evaluated on their ability to grow these birds.
This is a short term project that runs from December 2, 2009 -January 22, 2010. The whole length of the project is 50 days.
Rules:
-
The parish livestock show will follow LSU State Livestock Rules unless stated otherwise.
- Broilers must be purchased from the Evangeline 4-H Office to participate in this project. The cost of the chicks is $0.50. Please return the registration form, located in the Clover Patch, by November 2nd, 2009. Make checks payable to: EVANGELINE 4-H LIVESTOCK.
- The chicks purchased from hatchery will be mixed sex (cockerels & pullets). Exhibitors will not be limited on the number ordered. It is recommended that you purchase 20-25 chicks to give you a good group to select three.
- Exhibitor must show his/her own birds.
-
The broilers will be shown as a trio and minimum weight will be 9 pounds.
-
Exhibitors will be allowed to show cockerels or pullets.
This is an excellent 4-H project to raise and keep 4-H records. These chicks grow very fast and are fun to raise. The deadline to order is November 2, 2009. The broilers must be picked up at the 4-H Office in Ville Platte on the day the project begins - tentatively December 2nd. Please return the order form by the deadline to the 4-H Office. The order form can be found in the attached newsletter.
LSU STATE BROILER SHOW
4-H club members participating in this activity must order birds in addition to the birds for the parish show. The LSU State Broiler Show will be held at the State Livestock Show. The project will begin in early January of 2009. Cost will be $.35 cents per bird. You may order as many birds as you wish. It is recommended you order a minimum of 20-25 birds to participate in this activity. The 2009 LSU Junior Broiler Show will be a Straight Run Show. Exhibitors will be allowed to show one pen of pullets and/or one pen of cockerels. An entry must consist of three (3) broilers (either three pullets or three cockerels).
Many of our 4-H'ers order these chicks to raise at home as a project and do not plan to show these chicks in Baton Rouge. This is fine - BUT- you need to indicate on your order form if you will not show your birds. The deadline to order is November 2, 2009. The chicks must be picked up at the 4-H Office in Ville Platte at the beginning of the project in January. Please turn in your order form by the deadline to the 4-H Office. The tentative delivery date is Thursday, January 7, 2010.
JUNIOR BEEF GRAZING PROJECT
The Beef Grazing Project consists of grazing a pen of four calves on two and one-half acres of winter pasture. Calves must be finished out on pasture only and NO FEED. This is the most practical educational program in the livestock projects. Calves can be from commercial or registered cows and should be born after December 1, 2008. (If you have rye grass pasture and retain ownership of heifers, steers, or bulls, this is a project you need to consider).
Three divisions will be offered:
- Steer
- Heifer
- Bulls (Very limited participation in LA.)
Points will be awarded for increase in weight gain after a 150-day period. The project will start in December and conclude in May. A fifty dollar ($50.00) cash prize will be awarded to the parish winner and a five hundred dollar ($500.00) scholarship will be awarded to the state winner. For more information, complete the form in the attached newsletter and return it to the 4-H Office at 230 Court Street, Ville Platte, LA, 70586, by October 23rd.
