Pigs, Chickens, Cows, and Clovers

Pigs, Chickens, Cows, and Clovers

What do pigs, chickens, cows, and clovers all have in common? The answer is easy, the celebration of the Louisiana 4-H Centennial. The Centennial was highlighted at one major 4-H event that took place in the month of February. This exciting event was the state 4-H Livestock show.

The state Livestock show was held at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales on February 9th-16th. Over 5000 youth and adults from around the state participated in this week long event. Banners were hung and announcements were made throughout so everyone would be informed of this momentous celebration. Door prizes which included centennial items, scholarships to 4-H camp and LSU Football tickets were given out throughout the week. We were very excited to introduce the 4-H Centennial pig who wore a large green bow and 100 painted on her side. She was the main attraction before the start of our parish competition. With all the excitement we also raised money for the centennial. The livestock show ended on Saturday night with an awards banquet.

Representing Franklin Parish at the state Livestock show were Paul Washam and Kristen Berry. Paul Washam placed 1st and 3rd in his class with heifers and 6th in his class with steers. Kristen Berry placed 12th with pullets and Top 22 with cockerels in the Poultry division. Congratulations to them both!

Well, the fun is just beginning. The highlights of March include the airing of the 4-H Documentary on March 12th. A half-hour TV documentary, “Louisiana’s Lucky Clover: A Century of 4-H” will be broadcast for the first time on Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB) and its affiliate stations on March 12 at 7:40 p.m. The documentary will re-air on LPB and all its’ affiliate stations Sunday, March 16th at 12:40 PM.

Be on the lookout for the Blue Bell 4-H Centennial ice cream in the 4-H Centennial Cupcake flavor that will be out in stores soon. The proceeds of this ice cream come back to 4-H. I hope everyone is having lots of fun celebrating the 4-H Centennial!
