Do you want to become more involved in community service projects, learn about working in groups and develop some leadership skills? The Iberia Parish 4-H Junior Leader Club may be the program for you.
The Junior Leader Club is designed to teach teens leadership skills, the skills needed to be productive and the skills for working as a member of a group. The club consists of 4-H members from Eighth to 12th grades and meets monthly.
Junior leaders are encouraged to develop service-learning programs for their communities. Junior leaders have an opportunity to make a difference in their communities and work as partners with community leaders. They also become mentors for younger 4-H members and gain important leadership skills that they will use and continually develop throughout their lives.
Through the partnerships they form, 4-H Junior Leader Club members are able to achieve more working together than they ever could alone. Building relationships with community leaders often begins with building trust. In addition to trusting others, junior leaders must be trustworthy and exhibit essential character traits. Leadership is the ability of being able to influence the thinking and actions of people. Junior leaders often work with a diverse range organizations which also allows them to experience various career options.
Iberia Parish 4-H Junior Leader Club members also participate in several service-learning projects throughout the year. Some previous projects include working with the TV 10 Food for Families Food Drive during Christmas, volunteering at assisted living facilities by hosting a monthly bingo match and by hosting an Easter egg hunt for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Acadiana.
Members also are given the opportunity to serve on four 4-H state leadership boards including the state 4-H Executive Committee, Fashion Board, Food and Fitness Board and Science, Engineering and Technology Board. In addition, junior leaders are eligible to attend Junior Leadership Conference and 4-H University on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge and to serve as 4-H Camp counselors.
