4-H: At Work for Youth in Iberville Parish

Iberville Parish 4-H agents Ashley Pitre and Shannon Dietz are eager and striving to make Iberville Parish 4-H program its best. A series of educational lessons are offered monthly to address the needs of the youth. These programs have all been aligned with LEAP content standards and positive youth development applications. These lessons are designed to further educate youth and offer enrichment to the lessons taught in the school setting. All 4-H educational programs are designed to enhance the youth’s ability to become a positive and contributing citizen. Each 4-H member is allowed to choose at least one project area on which to focus and develop.  The program focus for the 2008-09 school year is "Healthy Lifestyles" focusing on foods & nutrition.

The Iberville 4-H Foundation is the primary funding source for the 4-H program. The foundation members, including 4-H agents, are responsible for promoting the objectives of the 4-H youth development program within the parish in order to obtain funding at a local level. To donate to the Iberville Parihs 4-H Foundation please contact our office.

The objective of Iberville Parish 4-H youth development is to provide a mix of new and traditional programs that emphasize community service, leadership and life skills as well as develop leadership qualities and a spirit of volunteerism in youth and adults alike. There are various community service projects being promoted through the local 4-H youth program.

Iberville Parish has a Teen Leader Ambassador program in which all high school members are active. These youth assist with parish activities and conduct extensive community service projects.  Any youth enrolled in 4-H, ages 13 or older by January 1st of the current year, is eligible to participate in this Community Service Club.

Our 4-H livestock program is designed to train youth in raising livestock animals to show as 4-H projects as well as teach positive character traits.  The program provides an opportunity for personal growth and development of youth.  If you would like more information on this program please contact our office.

There are several wonderful opportunities for participation offered at the local level.  Some activities include: National 4-H Week, Winter Foods Festival, 4-H Mini Farm, Rabbit and Poultry Shows, Cookery Contests, Sewing Workshops, Livestock and Horse Shows, Pet Show, Beef Poster Contest, Dairy Poster Contest, Achievement Day Awards, Christmas Workshop, Bread Workshop, Record Book Workshop and Fishing Rodeo.

For youth who dare to venture out, 4-H offers various state and summer activities such as: 4-H Camp (4th-6th Grade) , 4-H Challenge Camp (7th-8th Grade), 4-H University (8th-12th Grade), 4-H Junior Leadership Conference, 4-H Cooperative Conference, Wild Woods Wandering Camp, Marsh Maneuvers Camp, 4-H Citizenship LA Focus, 4-H Night with the Hornets, 4-H Day at Tiger Stadium, 4-H Day at the Capitol and several scholarship programs.
