You CAN Make a Difference!

Parish wide Aluminum Can Recycling Contest-Each club should collect aluminum cans to be recycled & turn them in to Mrs. Kim at the monthly club meetings. At the end of the school year (March) the club that collects the most cans will get to have a party.

Billboard Opportunity

Show your artistic abilities by entering the State Fair of Louisiana Poultry Poster Contest. Cash prizes for 1st-3rd place will be awarded for Division I: 4th-6th grades; Division II: 7th-9th grade; and Division III: 10th-12th grades. RULES: Draw a billboard that encourages or promotes the consumption of poultry or eggs and their importance for health. Billboard design must be made on 22 x 28 poster board ONLY. Do not attach anything to the poster. Posters will be displayed in the State Fair Poultry Barn during the Junior Poultry Show October 22-25, 2009. Posters are due to the 4-H Office Friday, October 16th.

Draw a Beef Poster & Win Prizes!!!

Division I: 4th-6th Division II: 7th-8th Division III: 9th-12th RULES: Billboard will encourage or promote the consumption of beef and beef products and their importance for health. Billboard design must be on 22”x28” poster board only. Do not use copyrighted slogans or designs (such as “Where’s the Beef?). Print your name, address, grade in school and parish on back of poster in upper right-hand corner. Posters are due to the 4-H Office Friday, November 20th. Parish winners will receive ribbons and first place winners in each division will advance to the state contest. First thru third place winners at state in each division will receive cash prizes.


Jackson Parish 4-H Fair Dates

Come join us for a week of fun at the Jackson Parish Fair. The 4-H Fair will be held October 6, 8, 9 at the Fairgrounds and Rodeo Arena in Jonesboro. Entry forms may be picked up at the 4-H Office or printed from our website. Please have an entry form completed & ready to turn in at registration.


Livestock Club & Horse Club Meetings

Please remember the Livestock Club Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 17th and the Horse Club Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 24th. Both meetings will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the 4-H Office on the 3rd floor of the courthouse. If you plan to exhibit livestock or horses, please make plans to attend these meetings.

Horse Show

Tuesday, October 6th Registration @ 12 p.m. - Show starts @ 1 p.m.
The horse show is open to any 4-H/FFA member in Jackson Parish. Exhibitors do not have to own the horse but they must regularly care for the horse. Horses do not have to be registered. No stallions of any age may be shown. No two 4-H members may show the same horse with the exception of the Clover Buds division (those younger than 9 years of age). A rider may not show more than one horse in the performance classes. Halter classes may be divided depending on the number of horses in each breed. A youth may enter a maximum of 3 horses in halter. Please see entry form for classes available.

Livestock & Poultry Shows

Thursday, October 8th Registration @ 5 p.m. Judging @ 6 p.m.
Livestock projects must adhere to Louisiana State Fair possession dates.Baking, Photography, and Art Contests These contests will be divided by grades: K-3rd (Clover Buds), 4th-6th, & 7th-12th grades.

Baking Contest-you may bring a maximum of 2 items that you have baked. Do not bring food that must be served hot; there is not a microwave to heat the food.

Photography Contest-you may enter a maximum of 2 photographs that you have taken. Photos can be black and white or color, can be of anything, & must be framed.

Art Contest-you may enter a maximum of 2 pieces of art work that you have created. Art entries must be framed if possible. This includes drawings, paintings, etc.

Pet, Dog, and Rabbit Shows

Friday, October 9th R[Image: Beef Cow]egistration @ 5 p.m. Judging @ 6 p.m.
The pet show is open to any Jackson Parish 4-H member. Youth may bring any pet to enter the pet show. All pets must be on a leash or in a cage. Pets that cannot behave will be asked to leave; please do not bring an animal that is aggressive towards people or other animals. Some categories include best dressed pet, ugliest pet, cutest pet, most talented pet, longest tail, etc.

The dog show is open to any Jackson Parish 4-H member. All dogs must be able to walk on a leash. Unruly or aggressive dogs will be excused. Dogs do not have to be purebred and all dogs are welcomed. No two youth may show the same dog with the exception of Clover Buds division. Classes will be small, medium and large breeds with one class for all Clover Buds.

The rabbit show is open to any Jackson Parish 4-H member. Youth may enter a maximum of 5 rabbits. Only domestic rabbits-no wild rabbits will be allowed. ARBA rules will apply.

State Fair of Louisiana Livestock Show dates, schedule, and entry forms may be found at www.statefairoflouisiana.com under the livestock heading on the left hand side. Entry forms & fees should be submitted to our office no later than September 3rd.


Pitch a Tent-It’s Time to Set Up Camp!

What-4-H Survival Camp
Where-USFS camp grounds at Gum Springs Hwy 84 west
When-October 15th-16thWho-7th-12th grade 4-H’ers
Cost-$30
Deadline for registration-Thursday, October 1st

This camp will help you learn team building and leadership skills. Parishes will compete against one another in outdoor skills competition, so bring your game face! This camp will be a great opportunity for any 4-H’er to learn more about the outdoors in an exciting environment. The cost of the camp is $30 which is due by 4:00p.m. on Thursday, October 1st at the 4-H office. Along with this fee you must complete a registration form and a health form which are available at the 4-H Office. Meals and t-shirt included with registration. If you like to sleep in the great outdoors & “rough it” 4-H Survival Camp is the camp for you! Space is limited [Image: Family Camping]and will be filled on a “first come, first serve” basis.

Pumpkin Carving

Fall is right around the corner. That means it’s almost time for our yearly 4-H Pumpkin Carving Contest. The details are still being worked out, but the date has been set-Saturday, October 17th. Be sure to mark this date on your calendar because you don’t want to miss out on this fun contest!

“Catch-Phrase for Camp”

What’s a good theme for 4-H Summer Camp? Send us your most creative ideas for slogan in 7 words or less. Illustrations must accompany the phrase and will be part of the contest. The winning slogan will be one that is brief and “catchy”, capturing the spirit of 4-H Camp Grant Walker. The slogan will be used on all publicity for camp and on the camp t-shirt. Please submit your entry to the 4-H Office by Monday, October 26th.
