[Image: Fall Contest Day]The 2009 Jeff Davis Parish 4-H Fall Contest Day will be held at Lacassine High School on November 14, 2009. Registration: 9:00-9:45 a.m.. Consists of Ground Beef Cookery, Rice Cookery, Sugar Cookery, Seafood Cookery, Commodity Illustrated Talks, Demonstrations and Tests.
May only enter 1 dish in each commodity (Beef, Sugar, Rice, Seafood)!
Ground Beef Cookery (All Grades)
Bring to the contest a prepared ground meat dish to fit one or more of the divisions described below. A minimum of 1 pound of ground beef must be used. All beef should be cooked until gray in color, not pink, and juices run clear. The beef cookery will be divided into three divisions:
Low-Calorie Main Dish: A dish which provides less than 300 calories per serving. Calculation of calories must be stated on recipe.
Quick & Easy Main Dish: A dish that is ready to serve in less than one hour. The time for each step and for cooking and baking will be stated on recipe.
One-Dish Meal: A dish that provides complete servings from at least three of the five required food groups per serving of the prepared dish. Servings of the dish should be on recipe.
Seafood Cookery (All Grades)
1. All final garnish of the dish should be done by the contestant.
2. Anything used to enhance the appearance of dish must be in or on the serving container. Examples of items not allowed: placemats, flower and table arrangements, figurines, etc.
3. The recipe must use at least 1 cup of the seafood.
4. Canned seafood will not be accepted.
5. Categories are: a) Shrimp; b) Crawfish; c) Oyster; d) Fish/Non-traditional, and e) Crab.
Rice Cookery (All Grades) (Enter dish using at least one cup of rice)
1. Open to all 4-H club members.
2. Dish may be entered in categories: Rice Desserts, Rice Main Dish, & Rice Side Dish.
3. Recipe must contain at least 1 cup of cooked rice (wild rice is not a cultivated rice in Louisiana and does not meet the requirements for 1 cup cooked rice).
4. No place settings will be allowed at contest.
5. Dish must be prepared at home by 4-H member.
Sugar Cookery (All Grades)
Bring a prepared dish to fit one of the categories below:
A. Baked items (bread, cakes, pies, cookies, etc.)
B. Other Dessert (candies, icebox pies, ice cream, etc.)
This does not include homemade jams, jellies, preserves, etc.
Requirements:
1. Recipe must include at least 1 cup of sugar, includes raw, brown, powdered and granulated sugars only.
2. There can be no raw eggs in the final product.
Egg, Poultry, Turkey, Beef, Seafood Ambassador Program
A. Five Categories:1. Production of commodity; 2. Food preparation and nutritive value; 3. Food safety practices;
4. Processing; and 5. Marketing.
B. Division I - (Grades 4-6) Contestant designs (a) standard poster 22” x 28” relating to one of five categories listed above (b) presents a 2-3 minute explanation of poster subject (c) responds to questions from judges.
Division II – (Grades 7-9) Contestant designs (a) standard poster 22” x 28” relating to one of five categories listed above (b) members prepares an essay not to exceed 500 words or 3 types pages, (12-14 spaces per inch) double spaced, about the selected subject; (c) presents a 2-3 minutes explanation of subject; (d) responds to questions from judges.
Division III – (Grades 10-12) Contestant will present a 5-8 minute illustrated talk following current guidelines of the national commodity illustrated talk contests. (Only Egg Illustrated Talk requires a dish).
The following tests will be offered:
Bicycle, Electricity, Computer and Food Nutrition – written tests will be taken from project books.
Compact Tractor written test (Jr. High & Sr. High)
Electric Energy Illustrated talks (Individuals) emphasis should be on the wise use of electricity and/or benefits of electricity, Automotive Driving test for Sr. high members only; will consist of written test. Only 4-Hers with a valid LA Drivers License will be allowed to take the Automotive Tests.
General Demonstrations for all grades – demonstrations (food preparation included) that does not fit any category in previous contests. This can be used by 4-H member (13 or older) to qualify for a particular 4-H University contest.
