Soil Samples

The LSU AgCenter is happy to test soil for farmers and home gardeners alike. These samples are tested and evaluated for nutrients and minerals in the soil, along with the soil pH, and the results are customized for whatever crop or plant that is desired to be grown. If, for example, the grower is wanting to plant roses, the soil is analyzed as stated above and the necessary adjustments the grower needs to make to the soil, based on the analysis, are suggested.

How to Submit a Soil Sample

In order to have your soil tested, follow the steps below:

  • For an average garden of about 1/8 of an acre, take five to six samples at a depth ranging from the top of the surface to six inches. Mix the samples in a bucket or other container and pour the contents into a small container or plastic bag. Be sure the total volume of the soil is at least one pint.
  • Bring the sample to the Jeff Davis Parish office located at 1006 S. Lake Arthur Avenue in Jennings along with a check or money order for $7 made out to Agronomy STPAL. Cash cannot be accepted.
  • Fill out the soil information sheet provided by our office.
  • Soil samples are then mailed to Baton Rouge, LA for analysis. After approximately two weeks the results will be mailed to the address indicated on the soil information sheet.
  • Once you get the results, if you have any questions, you can contact County Agent Allen Hogan at this office for further information at 337-824-1773 or email.
