2009-2010 4-H Hotline Newsletter

4-H Hotline is the monthly newsletter for the 4-H program in Lafayette Parish. It contains information about upcoming events, activities and competitions.

This volume is for the 2009-2010 school year. The newsletter is published from September to May each year.

September 2009

It’s 4-H Time Again!

4-H is a FUN organization for youth that offers more than 45 projects in which club members can learn by doing. 4-H offers a whole new world of opportunities for boys and girls to learn new things, go to new places, and meet new friends. Through demonstrations, activities, and contests, club members can gain knowledge of science, agriculture, home economics, personal development, community service, leadership and citizenship. Often this knowledge helps open the door to a future career. But the main purpose of 4-H is to HELP YOUTH BECOME EFFECTIVE CITIZENS. Any boy or girl who is 9 years old by January 1 of the current school year (that means January 2010), in the third through 12th grades, and is willing to follow the 4-H ideals and standards is eligible to join.

This newsletter, the 4-H Hotline, will be given to you each month from September to May. 4-H’ers should take it home, read it, and share it with your parents. It will keep you posted on all 4-H events. If you have any questions concerning the 4-H program, call the 4-H Office at (337) 291-7090.

National 4-H Week

The 2009 National 4-H Week theme will be “Celebrate 4-H.” Your club can help celebrate 4-H week by having special programs at school, making and wearing 4-H name badges, having clean up the campus days, green and white day, or preparing a 4-H exhibit in your school library for EVERYONE to see. We also challenge each club to “Paint The Town Green” again this year in honor of National 4-H Week! Show us what you've got! This year each club participating will receive 10 points toward the Outstanding Club Award. Your leaders will receive an application form. Help your leader by thinking of ways to publicize your club, taking part in activities and setting a good example for others. How many clubs will contact the local TV stations and be interviewed on TV concerning 4-H? This year we challenge EACH 4-H club to get some sort of TV coverage at least one time during the school year.

2009-2010 State 4-H Boards

At this summer’s 4-H University held at LSU, Lafayette 4-H was well represented. Jonathan Thibeaux of Lafayette High was elected State 4-H Parliamentarian. Serving on the Executive Committee for the second year in a row is Desirè Taylor of Carencro High. Katie Domas from Academy of Sacred Heart is serving on the State 4-H Food and Fitness Board again this year and Amanda Barry from Teurlings Catholic is serving once again on the State 4-H Fashion Board. Congratulations to ALL!!!

Searching for Livestock Exhibitors

As our 4-H year begins, some members make plans to raise and show livestock projects. If you are one of these, there are several things you must do:

  1. When completing the 4-H enrollment card, be sure to mark the appropriate livestock project (beef, sheep, horse, etc.). This will put you on the livestock/horse mailing list.
  2. Parents of new exhibitors must also contact Miss Nikki or Mrs. Angie at the 4-H office (337-291-7090) to discuss the 4-H livestock program and must attend one of the meetings scheduled for new exhibitors.
  3. First year exhibitor meeting for livestock is scheduled for September 21, 6:30 pm at the 4-H office (beef, dairy, sheep, goat, swine and poultry). Rabbit exhibitors do not attend this meeting, but should attend the 4-H Rabbit Clinic on October 8. First year horse exhibitors meeting will be held on March 25.
