Divisions: I-4th grade, II-5th and 6th grades, III-7th and 8th grades, IV-9th -12th grades

  • photo must be a 3x5 or 4x6

  • attach entry form to back of photo with clear tape
  • do not mount photo on paper

Beef, Seafood and Sweet Potato Cookery and Ambassador Contest

GROUND BEEF COOKERY

A 4-H’er may enter only one dish in Ground Beef Cookery.

Enter one complete dish with a serving utensil and a recipe in one of the following categories. A dish must use at least one pound of ground beef. Exhibit entire dish.

Divisions are:

  • Low Calorie Main Dish—Show calories for each item used. Total calories; divide by number of servings in the dish. Calorie content cannot equal more than 300 calories per serving.
  • One Dish Meal—Dish contains food from 3 of the 5 food groups—bread, cereal, meat, fruit, vegetable, milk and milk products.

Note: All ground beef should be cooked until gray in color, not pink, and juices run clear.

SEAFOOD COOKERY

Categories are: *Crab *Shrimp *LA Farm Raised Catfish *Other seafood ( must be species from Louisiana Seafood List not included in other divisions) *Crawfish

  • Bring a copy of the recipe and a serving utensil
  • Bring a prepared seafood dish to the contest. The dish must use at least one cup of seafood.
  • The seafood must be fresh, frozen, pasteurized or dried. Canned seafood will not be acceptable. Entries may contain a small amount of second seafood but not more than ½ of the total amount of the seafood. Catfish and Crawfish divisions to be able to include a small amount of a second seafood in the recipe, but must be ½ (half) of cup or less.
  • A 4-H’er may enter only one dish in seafood cookery. Surimi, an artificial crab made from fish cannot be used. There can be no raw seafood in the final dish.

SWEET POTATO COOKERY

A 4-H’er may enter only one dish in Sweet Potato Cookery.

Enter one complete dish with a serving utensil and a recipe in one of the following categories. Use at least one cup fresh, canned or frozen sweet potatoes in the recipe. Exhibit entire dish.

· Divisions: *Dessert *Other

1st Place winners in the Egg, Poultry, Pecan, Beef, Seafood, and Sweet Potato Cookery will have the opportunity to enter their 1st place dish in the Area Cookery Contest. This contest will be held at the Alexandria Mall on March 18.

Details will be mailed out to the 1st place winners by early March.



2009-2010 4-H Commodity Ambassador Program
General Rules and Regulations:

The 4-H Commodity Ambassador Program is designed for education and enhancement of 4-H club members.

Each ambassador program will emphasize specific Louisiana agricultural commodities including egg, chicken, turkey and seafood.

Eligibility:Any bonafide 4-H member is eligible. Contestants may enter only one category in each Commodity Ambassador Program. Example: one seafood, one turkey, one chicken and one egg.

Division I 4-H club members in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades.

Division II 4-H club members in the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades.

Division III 4-H club members in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades.
Contestants must be 15 years of age by January 1 of the calendar year of the state contest.

COMMODITY AMBASSADOR DIVISION DESCRIPTIONS:

Division 1—Grades 4-6 Contestants designs (a) standard poster (22” x 28”) relating to one of the five categories listed above (be) presents a 2-3 minutes explanation of poster project (c) responds to questions from judges. The 4-H office has we sites addresses to help you get information.

Division 11—Grades 7-9 Contestant design (a) standard poster 22” x 28” relating to one of the above categories; (b) members prepare an essay not to exceed 500 words or 3 typed pages, (12-14 spaces per inch) double spaced about the selected subject; (c) present a 2-3 minute explanation of the subject; (d) responds to questions from judges. The 4-H Office has web addresses available to help you get information.

Division III—Grades 10-12 Contestants will present a 5-8 minute illustrated talk.

Present an illustrated talk on commodity. (should not be a demonstration) The 4-H Office has a listing of web sites available. The talk can be on a specific idea or an overview. Examples include: Nutritional Value, Economic Value, Cooking Principles, Versatility, Food Safety, Role in Today’s Healthy Diet, Beef’s Place in Agriculture, Role in Our National Economy, Role in Protecting the Environment.

Time Limit 5-8 minutes.

Contestants may use computer generated power-point presentations, slides or posters for the illustrated talk. Contestants must provide their own computer, screen and equipment for the presentation.

One easel will provided for the illustrated talk.

No table’s displays, costumes or other props will be allowed.

Contestants should limit reliance on note cards during the presentation.

COMMODITY AMBASSADOR CATEGORIES FOR PRESENTATIONS:

Each Commodity (egg, chicken, turkey and seafood) Ambassador Program consists of five categories for presentations.



Challenge Camp 2010

March 11-13, 2010
Theme: "A Tropical Island Adventure"
This camp is open for 7th graders and 1st time 8th graders. Limited to 10 participants per parish. In addition to indoor and outdoor challenges, you will have the opportunity to help build boats participate in a banquet.
Cost is $60.00
Deadline to sign up is February 15, 2010.

Attention: Graduating Seniors

There are several 4-H Scholarships offered through LaSalle 4-H. They are the Louisiana 4-H Foundation and the Scott 4-H Scholarships. All Scholarship applications must be in the LaSalle Parish Extension Office by March 1, 2010.

Focus for February: Fairness
Fairness means treating other people the way you want to be treated. When you're fair, you do your best to share, take turns, and treat each person with respect.

Ways to treat people fairly:

  • Find ways to share, take turns, and feel less jealous
  • Ask people what you can do to help make things more fair.
  • Include others in games and activities; don't leave people out.
  • Respect people who are different from you.
