Project Training Days:
4th, 5th, & 6th grade members may participate in Project Training Day to learn more about their projects. If you plan to participate, you need to sign up with your 4-H Leader. Make sure you sign up for either the Family Life Subjects on October 28, 2009 or the Agriculture & Natural Resources on November 12, 2009. You cannot sign up for both. The first Project Training Day on November 5, 2009 will be held at North Corbin Elementary at 4:00 p.m.
National 4-H Week:
October 4-10, 2009, this is a wonderful opportunity to promote 4-H as well as, show teachers and other school personnel how much our clubs appreciate their cooperation. Some ideas may include: door decoration, news articles, bulletin board displays, treats for the teachers, etc.
Officer Training Day:
We will have training for our Elementary & Middle School Club Officers on October 20, 2009 at 4:00 p.m. at the Livingston Parish Literacy and Technology Center in Walker. The session will last approximately one hour.
Catch-phrase for Camp Contest:
What’s a good theme for 4-H Summer Camp? Come up with your most creative ideas for a slogan…in 7 words or less. Also, illustrations must accompany your phrase this year. The winning slogan will be one that is brief and “catchy”, capturing the spirit of 4-H Summer Camp and Camp Grant Walker. The contest is open to all 4-H Club members. The slogan will be used on all publicity for camp and on the camp t-shirt. You must include your full name and age, parish and 4-H Club, complete mailing address, and telephone number. This month’s pillar is Respect. To be respectful; you must be courteous and polite, and
accept others without prejudice. Don’t insult, abuse, hurt or put down anyone. Respect is an important part of the 4-H Life Skills:
• HEAD – before you act, always think, “Will this hurt or disturb someone else?
• HEART – be nice to others
• HANDS – practice good manners
• HEALTH – respect your body and take care of yourself
Pumpkins Are Nutritious!
Did you know pumpkins are 90% water? While this may seem surprising, many fruits and vegetables are largely water. Pumpkins are just plain good for you. They are low in fat, low in calories, loaded with vitamins and very tasty too!
Here are some stats on what’s in one cup of pumpkin puree:
Calories: 80
Carbohydrates: 19 grams
Cholesterol: 0
Fat: less than 1 gram
Potassium: 588 milligrams
Protein: 2.4 grams
Vitamin A: 310% of RDA
Vitamin C: 20% of RDA
King & Queen Contest – Southeast District Livestock Show
This is a scholarship contest. It is open to exhibitors at the Southeast Jr. Livestock Show who will be 16 years of age or older on or before January 1, 2010. Contact Mr. Bobby or Miss Christy RIGHT AWAY for entry forms.
4-H Beef Grazing:
If you are interested in a beef ryegrass grazing contest contact Mr. Bobby for complete rules. You must put 4 steers, bulls or heifers on 2.5 acres of ryegrass and compete on rate of gain and cost per pound of gain.
Horse Shows:
Many 4-H Members enroll in the horse project. If you want to show your horse in the 4-H Horse shows, please have your parents call Mr. Bobby.
Livestock Exhibitors:
There will be a validation for commercial beef and dairy, commercial does, commercial ewes, market goats, and market lambs on November 7th at the Livingston Parish Fairgrounds. It will take place from 9 to 12. You must attend to be eligible for the District and State Livestock Shows.
The possession date for registered beef, dairy, goats, and lambs is November 7th.
The market hog validation will take place on December 3rd. The possession date for breeding hogs is December 5th. If you have any questions, please contact the office.
Broiler Chicks:
Now is the time to order broiler chicks for the parish show at the end of January and the State Show in February. Make check payable to Livingston Parish 4-H foundation. Fill out the form below and return to Mr. Bobby by November 4, 2009. NO PHONE IN ORDERS ACCEPTED!!!
