What is the Leader News?
The Leader News will keep you posted about upcoming activities, will inform you on the monthly meeting topic, and will include old and new business cutouts for your 4-H'ers to use at the club meetings.
Leaders, if you have any information concerning your school club, send us the information and we will try to publish it in the next issue so other leaders can benefit from it. We hope this newsletter will be useful to you. If you have any suggestions on what we could include or how to improve it, please let us know.
Club Meeting Schedule:
Please check the club meeting schedule for the date and time of your meeting. Contact us immediately if you need to make adjustments.
** We will frequently use e-mail to communicate with most of our leaders. The Leader Newsletter will be sent to you electronically each month. You may also find a copy of it on our Web site under “newsletters.”
National Character Counts! Week:
The Annual Character Counts! Week is October 18-24, 2009! National Character Counts! Week is celebrated every year during the third full week of October. You may want to visit the Character Counts! Web site at www.charactercounts.org for activity ideas and ways to celebrate Character Counts! Week.
Junior Leader Club:
If you have 4-H'ers in grades seven through 12, please invite them to become a member of a parishwide club called the Junior Leader Club. The club plans, organizes and conducts various community service activities, along with many fun events each year.
4-H Outdoor Skills: Shooting Sports:
The Livingston 4-H Outdoor Sports Association has been formed to administer the 4-H Outdoor Skills Program in Livingston Parish. For a student to participate in the Outdoor Skills Programs (Shooting Sports, ATV Safety and Sport fishing), he or she must be an active member of a school 4-H Club. Outdoor Skills Program activities will take place on Saturdays during the school year. Please refer to your Leader Handbook and e-mails for dates of activities and additional information pertaining to the Outdoor Skills Program. The next Shooting Sports activity will be on October 3, 2009, at 9 a.m. at Mr. Robert Wendt’s home in Denham Springs.
Catch-phrase for Camp Contest:
What’s a good theme for 4-H summer camp? Send us your 4-H'ers most creative ideas for a slogan — seven words or less. Illustrations should be included with the slogan this year. The contest is open to all 4-H members. The winning slogan will be one that is brief and “catchy,” capturing the spirit of 4-H Camp Grant Walker. The slogan will be used on all publicity for camp and on the camp T-shirt. Think fast — the deadline is October 31. Each entry must include the 4-H member's full name and age, parish/4-H Club, complete mailing address and telephone number. Individuals may submit multiple entries, which may be sent together to the following:
Kimberly Landry, 4-H Camp Director
Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center
3000 Hwy. 8, Pollock, LA 71467
Fax: (318) 765-3135 E-mail: Kimberly Landry
Broiler Chicks:
Now is the time to order broiler chicks for the parish show at the end of January and the state show in February. Orders are due to Mr. Bobby by November 4, 2009.
Project Training Days:
Fourth, Fifth and Sixth grade 4-H members may participate in Project Training Day to learn more about their projects. Those members wishing to attend should sign up with their leaders. The Project Training Day forms may be found in your Leader Handbook. Forms are due to the 4-H Office for the first Project Training Day by October 28, 2009. They are due by November 12, 2009 for the second Project Training Day. 4-H members may only sign up to participate in one of the trainings, not both.

National 4-H Week: October 4-10, 2009
This is a wonderful opportunity to promote 4-H, as well as show teachers and other school personnel how much our clubs appreciate their cooperation. Some ideas may include: door decorations, news articles, bulletin board displays, treats for the teachers, etc. More information can be found at the websites below.

National 4-H Week will take off with a speedy start on October 4, as the 4-H emblem makes its debut appearance in a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. The well-known national icon will be featured on the "TV panel" of the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet driven by Jeff Gordon at Kansas Speedway that day. The placement of the 4-H clover on the No. 24 Chevrolet was made possible through a generous donation by DuPont, sponsor of both the No. 24 team and of 4-H.
Old and New Business:
We would like to see 4-H members participate more in the club meetings by reading the old and new business of the newsletter. Each month you will receive a copy of the old and new business cutouts. We ask that you fill them out, cut apart, and give to 4-H members to read at the club meeting. For example, if you are a fourth-sixth grade leader, you may have club members who participated in 4-H camp over the summer. Have them share their experience with the other club members at the meeting. Feel free to elaborate on our abbreviated reports, as well as report on other activities that your club has conducted. Please use only the business that relates to your club’s grade(s).
