Using the Get Cooking, Kid! model developed by former 4-H'er Lauren Ogles, LSU AgCenter agents Laura Lee Perault and Natasha Pittman taught more than 20 kids how to prepare healthy foods, snacks and drinks based on MyPyramid during a workshop this summer.

Kids from Livingston Parish Family Nutrition Program (FNP)-eligible schools experienced preparing smoothies, waffle pizzas, trail mix, burritos and apple-banana dunk 'ems.

"We exposed the kids to reduced-fat items they may never have seen before, such as turkey pepperoni, skim milk, reduced-fat biscuits, fat-free refried beans, 2 percent cheese, fat-free sour cream, whole wheat tortillas and so much more," said Natasha Pittman, LSU AgCenter nutritionist. Participating youth also recieved education on MyPyramid, food saftey, kitchen skills, hand washing, safe knife handling skills, portions and more.
