September 2009 Newsletter

[Image: Link to PDF Newsletter]The monthly 4-H newsletter gives information for upcoming events in Morehouse Parish and surrounding areas.

I would like to take this time to welcome you to the Morehouse Parish 4-H Club. We have many fun things planned for you this year. Work on your project book or participate to qualify as a 4-H Clover so that you may attend our annual Award’s Day in May. Also portfolios may be sent to Baton Rouge for competition. There are some great trips available to those who win these record book competitions.

Name the Newsletter

A new year calls for a new newsletter name. I want YOU to name the newsletter. Each 4-H'er may submit ONE recommendation for a name. The best way to submit your name is to email it to me. You MUST follow directions so I will know who is submitting names.

  1. Subject line—4-H Newsletter contest
  2. In your email put your name, age, school, and your newsletter name.
  3. Email to Jennifer Moran NO LATER than Friday, September 18.

Clover Corner

Congratulations to Emily Cooper, a freshman at Bastrop High, for running for Northeast Regional Representative and winning. Thanks for all your hard work you are doing to make Louisiana 4-H better!

Nathan Morrison, a freshman at Bastrop High, was selected as the Northeast Regional Representative Alternate. If either of the representatives are not able to attend meetings, Nathan will be allowed to attend. Congratulations Nathan!

Commodity Cookery

The cookery contest will be split into two different days this year. The first day will be October 12, 2009, and will be dishes in the categories of rice, pecan, catfish, and corn.

4-H Pet Show

On Saturday, October 24, 2009, you are invited to attend the Annual 4-H Pet Show. It will be held on the Cotton Stage at the Fair. Registration will start at 10:30 a.m. and the contest will begin at 11:00 a.m. All animals must be on a leash or in an appropriate container/cage for the particular animal. NOTE: No snakes or any poisonous animals/creatures will be allowed. Insects are also not allowed.

Vaccinations are required for all cats, dogs, etc. We do not want to take a chance on anyone or any animal getting rabies.

This summer, thirty-two 4-H'ers attended summer camp at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock, Louisiana. Seven 4-H'ers attended 4-H University in Baton Rouge. 4-H'ers lived in the dorms at LSU for four nights. They participated in contests and educational programs, while some 4-H'ers chose to attend Clover College and learn about Forensics, Wetlands, and Dramatic Arts.

Why Breakfast?

Smart Reasons to Eat Breakfast . . .

  • Breakfast fuels the body with nutrients. If you skip breakfast, you may not make up the nutrients missed from this meal.
  • Breakfast provides food energy for active play.
  • Breakfast gets you ready to learn. Kids learn better if they eat breakfast.
  • Breakfast helps maintain a healthy body weight since it helps control the urge to nibble or eat too much food at lunch. However, even with breakfast, young children may need a small morning snack.
  • Breakfast helps kids and adults feel good. Children may get morning tummy aches from hunger pangs if they miss breakfast.
  • Breakfast tastes good!

Smart Ways to Make Breakfast Successful . . .

  • Start making breakfast the night before so you can better manage your early morning time. You might mix the juice, slice fruit, or make hard-cooked eggs the night before.
  • Go to bed earlier so you get up in time for breakfast.

Stock your kitchen with quick-to-fix breakfast foods.

Easy Ideas for Quick, Yummy Breakfasts . . .

  • Ready-to-eat cereal with milk and fruit
  • Peanut butter on whole wheat toast
  • Bagel with cheese
  • Hard-cooked egg
