New Orleans is a major port in the United States and the largest city and metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana. La Nouvelle-Orléans (New Orleans) was founded in 1718, by the French Mississippi Company, under the direction of Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, on land inhabited by the Chitimacha Native American tribe. It is often referred to as the birthplace of jazz. The city is sometimes referred to by its many nicknames including “The Big Easy”, “The Crescent City”, "The City that Care Forgot”, “Nawlins”, and “NOLA” the acronym for New Orleans, Louisiana.
