Last April, Pointe Coupee 4-H’er, Katherine Robillard, grabbed first in the state with her Illustrated Talk on Egg Safety. With the help of 4-H Agent, Layne Langley, Katherine went on to compete at the National Level in Louisville, Kentucky, November 13-17, 2007, where she represented Louisiana. The week long trip included tours of popular Kentucky sites as well as the contest. While on the trip, the Louisiana delegates also toured Diamond Cave and ate at the Grand Opera Mills Mall. On the first day, everyone toured the Louisville Slugger Baseball Bat Factory. A personal tour was led by one of the factory employees. Churchill Downs, where the Kentucky Derby takes place each year, was the next stop. After having the opportunity to watch a horse race, the group then toured the museum. After a long day of touring, it was then time to head back to the hotel for practice and rest for the competition.

The next morning was an early one with getting to the contest site at 6:30 am and beginning to bake her Yam Crown Cake. This delicious recipe included such Louisiana commodities as: sugar, pecans, and yams. After a long morning of baking, Katherine began her talk. She was judged on poise, effectiveness of the speech, the demonstration of baking the cake, and taste of the finished product. At the awards banquet, Katherine earned Second Place which included a $400 savings bond for the Egg Safety Demonstration.
