The Rapides Parish 4-H Sewing Workshop was held July 20-24, 2009, at the LSU AgCenter Extension Office.
Eight 4-H'ers actively participated in the weeklong, hands-on, “Learn by Doing” workshop. The 4-H'ers learned the tools of the trade of sewing and how to operate a sewing machine. Teen volunteer Carly Knowles gave a demonstration on the parts/features of the sewing machine. Each 4-H'er learned proper measuring and pinning before cutting the fabric to make a decorative pillow. Two other projects made in the workshop were a “neat nightie" and pajama pants.
During the Friday morning class, the 4-H'ers were given a demonstration on basic crocheting by Rebecca Cates and another on simple embroidery by Tammy Lloid. All items made in the workshop can be entered in the Rapides Parish Fair competition.
Two adult volunteer leaders, Tammy Lloid and Regina Cates, provided leadership and helped with teaching the workshop. The sewing workshop oordinator was Ophelia L. Allen, an LSU AgCenter extension agent for the Rapides Parish 4-H Youth Development Program.
