GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

A. Pick up a program as you enter the school. Register for your contests! Please assemble in the cafeteria with your other club members for the assembly.

B. Divisions are: Elem. (4-6) and Jr. & Sr. High (7-12); except Public Speaking: Elem. (4), Elem. (5-6), and Jr. & Sr. High (7-12).

I. DEMONSTRATIONS

A. Elementary Categories

1. Arts and Crafts
2. Health
3. Safety
4. Foods
5. Agriculture (Plants, Animals, Wildlife, Insects, etc.)

B. Jr. and Sr. High Categories

1. Child Development
2. Nutrition/Foods
3. Agriculture (Plants, Animals, Wildlife, Insects, etc.)
4. Home Economics
5. Health/Safety

Demonstration Instructions for All Demonstrations

1. Members must furnish their own equipment and supplies and are responsible for cleaning up after their presentation

2. All Elementary and Junior High demonstrations may be a Team (two only from same school and same division) or Individual.

3. Demonstrations should be “Show And Tell” not just a talk. Food demonstrations should be simplified and show a finished product.

4. Time limit for demonstrations is 10 minutes!

5. Members should be pre-registered; if not, they must get permission from the 4-H Agent to add them to the contest.

6. Members are limited to participating in three demonstrations.

II. PROJECT EXHIBITS/ TALKS - (for 4th to 6th Grade members only!)
A. Members will exhibit an item made in any of their 4th to 6th grade projects and/or give a 1-3 minute talk on some subject relating to their project.
 
B. A poster should be used to highlight the main points of the talk.

C. The scoring will be based on: Exhibit (50%) and Talk (50%).or Illustrated Talk (100%).

III. PUBLIC SPEAKING

A. Speech must be 1-3 minutes for Elementary, and 3-5 minutes for Junior and Senior High. Notes may be used but points may be deducted.

B. Divisions: Elem. (4th); Elem. (5th & 6th); and Jr. & Sr. High (7-12th) C. Categories

1. My Favorite Person and Why!

2. Any Other Subject D. No visuals such as posters, charts, etc. are allowed. E. Speech is worth 100 points.

IV. CLOTHING CONTEST CONSTRUCTION and APPEARANCE JUDGING - Members model the garment they have made and the garment is judged for sewing construction (properly sewn) and appearance. For Ready to Wear contest, the senior members are judged on Appearance and Knowledge.

DIVISIONS

A. Elementary (4th – 6th grades).

1. Drawstring Bag
2. A-Line Skirt

Note: If members did not attend the Parish Clothing workshops, they may get the pattern from the 4-H Office!

B. Junior High (7th – 8th grade) - Any 2 piece outfit made from commercial pattern. Suggested pattern – Butterick #3499.

C. Senior High (9th – 12th grade) Contestant limited to one outfit per category. Outfits for the sewing classes (1, 2 and 3) should be made from a commercial pattern.

1. Casual Wear – Dress, Skirt, shorts, or dressy outfits. Must be a complete outfit.

2. Creative Choice – may be any type and for any occasion. Outfit must feature (3) or more advanced methods. Use commercial pattern.

3. Special Occasion – may be formal or party outfit, prom & bridle dresses. Must be complete outfit sewn from commercial pattern.

4. Ready to WearAny member may wear and model clothing selected and purchased by the member. Members will be judged based on their Appearance as well as on answers to questions concerning the Wearing and Caring of the garment.

V. HORTICULTURE/PLANT I.D.

1. Students must identify samples from common trees, shrubs, fruits, vegetables and ornamentals.

2. Study by viewing plants at garden centers and vegetables in store.

VI. BICYCLE RODEO CONTEST

1. Members may bring their own bike or ride the bike provided.

2. Contest will consist of two timed events:
a. Slow Ride – Points are earned by having the slowest time between two assigned points. Penalty points will be assigned when a foot touches the ground.

b. Obstacle CourseMember must ride the bike through the obstacle course. Points are earned for the fastest time.

3. Divisions are: Elem. (4-6), and Jr. and Sr. High (9-12).

VII. PROJECT BOOK AND PORTFOLIO AWARDS

Members may turn in their Project Book(s) along with their Portfolio to be judged for Project awards. NOTE: The complete Project Book along with the Portfolio forms are due to the 4-H Leaders by Friday, April 11.

VIII. ARCHERY TOURNAMENT

A. Only members who have participated in a past Archery Workshop may participate! This includes past years’ workshops and Summer Camp as well as the workshops this year!

1... Members will be allowed seven practice shots in the Practice Round

2. For the Scoring Competition, members will shoot seven shots at the target from a range of 10 yards.

3. Divisions will be: Elem. (4-6) and Jr. and Sr. High (7-12).

4. Categories: 1. Bare Bow 2. Straight Bow/Recurve with Sight Pins

5. Note: Due to Safety concerns, there will be no Category for Compound Bows at this contest.
