Spooky Greetings, 4-H members! Welcome to the beginning of a successful year in 4-H! Now is the time to get the boiling pot rolling by getting involved in the MANY opportunities 4-H has to offer. Just like cooking a pot of stew, the more spices you put into it, the more you get out of it. So, join the fun, and bring a friend along!

Special 4-H Dates to Remember
· Regional Challenge Camp Mtg. on Wednesday, October 21, at 4-H Office from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. (Those selected to attend will receive a letter in the mail. If you are unsure if you were selected, please call 985-785-4473 or e-mail Mrs. Kali at kzammit@agcenter.lsu.edu.
· Officer / Leader Training on Saturday, October 24, at Belle Chasse Primary (Elected 4-H officers and school 4-H leaders are invited to attend. Transportation will be provided. See Officer / Leader Training Handout for more information.)
Are You Interested in Sewing or Fashion?
Attention 4-H Members: Each year 4-H agents and volunteers conduct a series of sewing workshops at the St. Charles 4-H Office to help you increase your knowledge on sewing and fashion. Members will get the chance to participate in workshops according to their grade level. Please be on the LOOKOUT for sewing workshops coming up for you!

WORKSHOPS
The three workshops will be offered on a rotational basis with one hour for each workshop. Members will be split into three groups with one group attending the Archery Workshop, one group attending the Fishing Workshop, and the other group attending the Wetlands/Health Workshop. All members can participate!
· ARCHERY WORKSHOP - Members will learn the parts of a bow, types of arrows, proper shooting form and safety. Members will shoot Recurve bows. Members attending the Archery workshop will receive the Shooting Sports project book and will qualify to participate in the Parish Archery Competition in March.
· FISHING WORKSHOP – Members will learn about the fishing industry, the two types of fishing and what bait to use, and boat safety. Members will also compete in a casting competition where they catch colorful fish with their fishing poles.
· WETLANDS/HEALTH WORKSHOP – Members will learn about the nutritional value of fish, how to make a delicious wetlands treat, how to do a demonstration, and how to work as a team! Remember to bring your appetite and imaginations for this workshop!
LUNCH – Please bring money for lunch. Junior Leaders will be selling hot dogs, snacks, and drinks! They will also be selling St. Charles 4-H T-shirts, 4-H wristbands, pins, etc.
RELAY RACES – We want to see SCHOOL CLUB SPIRIT by having School 4-H Clubs participate in the 4-H Fun Day Relay Race Competition!!! Members from each club will sign up to compete in at least one of the competitions listed below. Members will be divided into teams of six.
Divisions: Elem. (4-6) and Junior High (7-8). Teams will be mixed, but we will try to have equal boys and girls on each team. Awards will be given to overall club teams for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
Learn to Sew By Hand

For: Elementary, Middle, and High School Students
What to Bring:
· $3.00 fee (to cover snacks and supplies)
Learn how to thread a needle, sew a button, and sew by hand by attending this workshop. The workshop is for all members interested in learning to sew. Please be courteous and call the 4-H office at 985-785-4473 to register. You may also sign-up at the workshop. Remember to bring your $3.00 workshop fee at the workshop.

Middle and High School Sewing Field Trip
All Middle School and High School students interested in sewing are invited to attend a trip to Jo-Ann’s Fabric and Craft Store where experienced volunteers will teach Middle School students about choosing fabrics and high school students about choosing a pattern. If you are interested in attending this workshop, please call the 4-H Office to register (985-785-4473).

4-H Club T-Shirt Contest
Show your 4-H Club Spirit by participating in the St. Charles Parish 4-H Club T-shirt Contest. Decide on a t-shirt design and have your club members order and wear their 4-H shirts to various 4-H Club and Activity Days! All Clubs participating in this contest will be asked to wear their school’s 4-H Club T-Shirt at Achievement Day in April, where all shirts will be judged! Club t-shirts will be judged based on Originality, Use of the 4-H clover, Use of School Club Name, and Creative Theme. (Check with your Leader or 4-H Agent for correct use of the 4-H Clover.) Good luck and be creative!!!
4-H Club Scrapbook Contest
Be proud and show off what you do in 4-H!!! We want to hear about all the GREAT things that you do in your 4-H club throughout the year. All 4-H club members and the club Reporter can help by taking pictures, cutting out newsletters with members’ pictures and names, and writing and cutting out newspaper articles on your club’s activities. Help your 4-H Reporter to make a Club Scrap Book, which you will submit at Achievement Day in April. Each Club Scrapbook will be judged on Originality, Neatness, and Coverage of 4-H events (including photographs, newsletters, news articles, etc.). Good luck and remember to show off your 4-H club spirit!!!
