[Image: YES meeting]Y.E.S. is an organized after-school program that combines education and fun. In a recent class, Y.E.S science volunteer, Mr. Hampton, and his class discuss the importance of plants and their functions.
The title of this lesson was 'Yummy Plants'. The objectives stipulated that students will: (1) understand the structure and function of roots, stems, and leaves; (2) identify the parts of a plant by looking at an entire plant or a part of a plant; (3) understand the importance of plants for animals’ and humans’ existence.
Students learned about the four parts of a plant: roots, stems, leaves, and flowers. They also were able to pick a plant and brainstorm on the unique characteristics or adaptation of each organ based on its habitat. Afterwards, they were able to observe, classify, and dissect many vegetables.
