National 4-H Week ~ October 4-10, 2009 Join 5 million 4-H’ers in celebrating National 4-H Club Week. 4-H is 101 YEARS OLD in Louisiana! Suggested activities are flag raising ceremonies, poster contests, school assembly programs, green and white day, teacher appreciation functions, wearing 4-H name tags and radio spots. Theme: “4-H Keeping It Green.”
Officer Installation Each club is to have its officers elected by the date of the October Meeting. Officers to be elected are President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Reporter. A candlelight installation program will be conducted at your October Meeting.
Yambilee Festival The 2009 Yambilee Festival is scheduled for October 22-25 in Opelousas. This year’s festival will include a Yam Cooked Foods Contest (dishes which include one cup of yam product) and Yamimal Contest (decorate a yam to look like an animal) on Friday, October 23 at the Farmer’s Market between Landry and Vine Streets.
If anyone is interested in exhibiting a yamimal or yam dish, contact the Yambilee Office immediately at 948-8848. Registration is from 1-4 p.m.
Spirit Awards Silver Tray Awards will be presented to clubs promoting National 4-H Club Week. Summarize your club activities on the form and return it by October 16th.
Jim Bowie Livestock Show The Jim Bowie Livestock Show will be November 20-21, 2009 at the Ag Arena in Opelousas. There will be Beef Breeding, Steers, Sheep Breeding, Market Lambs, Market Goats, Breeding Goats and Dairy Shows. Showmanship will also be included. Contact the Extension Office at 337-948-0561 for more information.
Horse & Livestock Exhibitors To show horses or livestock (beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, swine, goats & poultry), contact Alison Muller at 948-0561. ENTRY DEADLINE: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2009. (NO EXCEPTIONS, FOR THERE ARE STATE DEADLINES TO MEET.) St. Landry Parish 4-H follows two show programs, the LSU State Show & the Southern University Livestock Show. Possession dates (date you acquire the animal at your home) are listed below:

Junior Leader Meeting The October meeting of the St. Landry Parish Junior Leaders will be Wednesday, October 28th from 4:30-6:00 p.m. at the Extension Office. A business meeting and educational program will be conducted.
THE MEMBERSHIP FEE IS $5.00 PER YEAR. ALL MEMBERS MUST HAVE PAID ENROLLMENT ON FILE BY OCTOBER 31st TO REMAIN ON THE MAILING LIST.
4-H Club Dues By November 2, 2009, 4-H Leaders should submit 4-H dues to the Extension Office. Make check payable to: St. Landry 4-H Foundation. Assessment is $5.00 per member for parish dues for the 2009-2010 school year. Please adhere to the due date, so that we may keep our records in order.
Rice Festival The 2009 International Rice Festival is scheduled for October 16-17th in Crowley. This year's festival will include a rice cooking contest (dishes which include rice products). If anyone is interested in exhibiting rice dishes at the Rice Festival, contact the Extension Office immediately at 948-0561.
4-H Fall Activity Day This event will be Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at the Ag Arena in Opelousas (Behind the Yambilee Building on Highway 190). 4-H’ers bring your pets, plants and poster to enter in this fun-filled event. Registration begins at 3:30 p.m. Contests begin at 4:00 p.m.

Poster Contest THEME: “4-H Keeping It Green”
4-H Elementary Project Workshop Day On Tuesday, November 24th at the Extension Office (Next to National Guard Armory/Airport Road), 4-H Members in Grades 4th-6th will have the opportunity to participate in “Hands On” workshops that relate to science. There will be four workshops to choose from:
1) KITCHEN CHEMISTRY: Discover the ends & outs of the kitchen. Make a “bomb in your mouth” along with trying healthy recipes. 2) WETLANDS: Discover waterway animals, adventures in marshes & environmental protection. Learn about the Mississippi River & build a bird feeder from recyclables. 3) FORENSICS: Join the St. Landry CSI division. Solve a mystery, read fingerprints, uncover tracks & solve a crime. 4) AGRICULTURE: Learn everything from food you eat to clothes you wear and make a chia pet to bring home.
4-H’ers should choose two (2) workshops to attend. We will attempt to give everyone their first 2 choices, but because we can only work with so many at a time, we may have to place them in another workshop.
To participate, 4-H’ers must pre-register by Monday, November 9. The cost to participate is $10.00. The workshop is LIMITED TO THE FIRST-50 4-H’ers that pre-register. LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED!
