4-H Key Club This award recognizes 4-H Club members who have shown outstanding leadership ability in their clubs and in their parishes. The lifetime membership in this honorary club is based on a scorecard which measures project growth, leadership and participation in parish and state 4-H activities. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age by DECEMBER 1, 2009. Forms may be obtained from a 4-H agent. Applications must be submitted by DECEMBER 7, 2009, to the Extension Office.
Award of Excellence This is awarded to junior 4-H members who have been in 4-H for two years (including this year) and are between the ages of 9 and 13. A point sheet must be submitted showing 4-H work through record book participation, local club activities, project work, camp and Achievement Day activities. A gold finished medallion will be awarded to 4-H members on Achievement Day. Forms may be obtained from a 4-H agent. Applications must be submitted to the St. Landry Extension office by DECEMBER 7, 2009.
4-H Records Contest The Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays give you spare time to get together with some of your friends to do some of the activities suggested in your 4-H project books.
Be sure to have someone take pictures of you as you work on activities and projects. Keep the pictures with your project book. Keep a notebook of all the 4-H events you participated in. Books are to be turned in for the parish 4-H records contest in March.
Jim Bowie Livestock Show The Jim Bowie Livestock Show will be NOVEMBER 20-21, 2009, at the Ag Arena in Opelousas. There will be Beef Breeding, Steers, Sheep Breeding, Market Lambs, Market Goats, Breeding Goats and Dairy Shows. Showmanship will also be included. Contact the Extension Office at 337-948-0561.
Junior Leader Meeting The November meeting will be WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, at the Extension Office in Opelousas. We will have a business meeting and work on our community service project.
ATTENTION 4-H MEMBERS! The 4-H agents WILL NOT be attending your December meeting. Conduct your own meeting. Have Fun. We will see you in the NEW YEAR!
Junior Leaders Geaux Green The St. Landry Parish Junior Leader Club has begun a recycling program at the Extension Office. The club is recycling the following items:

We want to encourage you to bring any of these items from home when you attend a 4-H workshop and/or contest held at the Extension Office. Please help the 4-H Junior Leaders Geaux Green!
Elementary Workshop Day Reminder PLACE: Extension Office (Next to National Guard Armory/Hwy. 1065 (Airport Rd-Opelousas) DATE: Tuesday, November 24, 2009 TIME: 9:30 A.M. - 12:30 P.M.
1) KITCHEN CHEMISTRY: Discover the ends & outs of the kitchen. Make a “bomb in your mouth” along with trying healthy recipes.
2.) WETLANDS: Discover waterway animals, adventures in marshes & environmental protection. Learn about the Mississippi River & build a bird feeder from recyclables.
3.) FORENSICS: Join the St. Landry CSI division. Solve a mystery, read fingerprints, uncover tracks & solve a crime.
4) AGRICULTURE: Learn everything from the food you eat to the clothes you wear and make a chia pet to bring home.
ONLY 4-H’ERS THAT HAVE PRE-REGISTERED CAN ATTEND THIS WORKSHOP. SPACE IS LIMITED.
LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED.
4-H Food Festival / St. Ignatius / December 12 Registration 9:00 - 9:30 A.M
Judging of Exhibits 9:30 - 11:00 A.M.
Consumer Foods Judging 9:30 – 11:00 A.M.
FOOD EXHIBIT RULES: Participants must compete as individuals (one 4-H'er per food dish). Overall winners receive awards. All participants receive blue, red or white ribbons for each dish. THE ENTIRE DISH MUST BE EXHIBITED with recipe attached. Include name, school and grade on the recipe.
RICE COOKERY: Make a dish containing at least one (1) cup of cooked rice. Categories include: Rice Main Dish, Rice Side Dish & Rice Dessert.
SUGAR COOKERY: Make a dish containing at least one (1) cup of sugar. Categories include: Baked Items (Breads, Cakes, Pies, Cookies, Etc.) and Non-Baked Items (Candies, Icebox Pies, Ice Cream, Etc.) This Is Not To Include Homemade Jams, Jellies, Preserves, Etc. There can be NO RAW EGGS in the final product.
GROUND BEEF COOKERY: Make a dish containing at least a pound of ground beef. Categories include: Low-Calorie Main Dish (Provides Less Than 300 Calories Per Serving – Calories Need to Be Stated on Recipe), Quick & Easy Main Dish (A Dish That’s Ready to Serve in Less Than One Hour – Time for Each Step & Cooking/Preparation Need to Be Stated on Recipe), One-Dish Meal (A Dish That Provides Foods from at Least Three of the Main Food Groups – Food & Food Group Need to Be Stated on Recipe).
SEAFOOD COOKERY: Make a dish containing at least one (1) cup of seafood. Categories include: Oyster, Crab, Shrimp, Fish & Other Seafood & Crawfish.
