St. Landry Parish Livestock Chatterbox - October 2009
[Image: Show Pig]Welcome The next livestock meeting will be held Monday, October 12, at the extension office at 6 p.m. Please make it a priority to attend this meeting. To those who are attending the State Fair of Louisiana, be sure to have current health papers with you. Health papers are needed in Shreveport in order to enter the grounds. If you do not have a 4-H Club at your school, please be sure to stop by the extension office to fill out an enrollment card to be a member at large. Failure to follow these guidelines will prohibit you from participating in the fall. Please be on the lookout for parish, district and state entry forms. The forms will be sent out in late October/early November. Please feel free to call or e-mail me with any questions you may have. I look forward to seeing you at the next meeting.

Project Possession / Hardship Exhibitors must have animals in their possession and under their personal care. Exhibitors must have their animals in possession and housed on exhibitors’ family property (owned, rented or leased) and must be under the exhibitors' daily care (feeding and management).
IF, FOR SOME REASON, YOUR ANIMAL IS NOT IN POSSESSION, AS INDICATED ABOVE (HOUSED ON SOMEONE ELSE’S PROPERTY, ETC.), THEN YOU MUST COMPLETE THE “4-H/FFA LIVESTOCK PROJECT POSSESSION/HARDSHIP FORM” AND TURN IT IN.
New Livestock Exhibitors If you know any first year exhibitors who are planning to show in the upcoming fall shows, have them contact the 4-H office as soon as possible. They must be added to the mailing list to begin sending them the newsletter.
Louisiana 4-H Museum The Louisiana 4-H Museum is NOW OPEN. The museum is filled with 4-H memorabilia and multimedia exhibits. Exhibit areas include a timeline of Louisiana 4-H, Louisiana 4-H Hall of Fame, Voices of 4-H, 4-H Emblem Collage, Service Projects, Camp Experiences, Contest, Science, Engineering, and Technology, Leadership, Healthy Living and so much more. The museum is located in Mansura, La. Please contact the Extension Office is you would like more information.
Market Animals Validation for Beef and Dairy Commercial Heifers, Market Lambs, Commercial Ewes, Market Goats and Commercial Does will be validated on November 5 at the Ag Arena for 5:30 p.m. This will be the absolute last date to validate Commercial Beef and Dairy Heifers, Market Lambs, Commercial Ewes, Market Goats and Commercial Does for the LSU AgCenter Livestock Shows.
All animals requesting validation must either have a valid official Louisiana State Fair tag fixed in animals ears or be tagged with an official LSU AgCenter tag when hair samples are collected. All validations must be conducted in the presence and observed by agents/ag teachers.
Any animals validated for The State Fair of Louisiana 2009 Shows and intends to be exhibited at the 2010 LSU State Show will be required to attend an LSU Ag Center Validation site and be validated for the 2010 LSU AgCenter State Livestock Show. Only validated market and commercial animals will be eligible to be exhibited at LSU AgCenter parish, district and state shows.

State Fair of Louisiana All animals are required to have current health papers. The Louisiana Department of Agriculture will be checking health papers as you enter the gate. Each exhibitor is required to secure his/her own. If you have not taken care of this, please contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. If you do not have internet access, you may call the show office at 318-635-1361.
4-H Enrollment Please be sure to enroll in 4-H for this year. The cost to enroll is $5. Please stop by the extension office to fill out an enrollment card if you are out of the parish or you do not have a 4-H Club at school. You will be enrolled as a member at large. You must enroll each year for 4-H. If you are not enrolled as of now, please make sure you fill out your enrollment card.
