August 2009

Welcome

It’s that time of year again! I hope everyone is getting ready for the 2009-2010 Livestock Show Season! The next livestock meeting will be held Monday, August 17, 2009 at the Extension Office for 6:00pm. Club meetings will begin in September. Don’t forget to join 4-H at your school as soon as possible when school begins. Even though you were a member this past school year and were enrolled in livestock, you MUST fill out another enrollment card. If you do not have a 4-H Club at your school, please be sure to stop by the extension office to fill out an enrollment card to be a Member at Large. Failure to follow these guidelines will prohibit you from participating in the fall. I am enclosing in the attached file the State Fair of Louisiana Entry Form and the Sugarcane Entry Form. These forms are due back to me in the office by September 1st. Please feel free to call or email me with any questions you may have.

2010 State Entry Fee Increase

There has been a fee increase for the 2010 State Livestock Show. Fees have not increased in over six years and with this increase will make the state show more inline with fees being charged at other major shows. Fees that are collected are put directly back into premiums. Entry fee collections have averaged $50,000 over the past three years and pay out is over $100,000 in regular premiums each year. Regular premiums do not include division or champion premiums which are paid out of collected foundation funds. With this increase, State Show will still pay out more premiums than they collect; however it will decrease the amount of state funds being used to fund premiums.

Below are the increases for the 2010 State Show

Market Steer/Breeding & Commercial Beef $25/head
Dairy Breeding & Commercial $25/head
Market Hogs/Breeding Swine $20/head
Market Lambs/Breeding & Commercial Sheep $20/head
Market Goat/Breeding & Commercial Goats $20/head
Broilers $10/pen
Exhibition Birds $3/bird
Grooming Chutes Cattle, Sheep, & Goat $15 Beef/$10 Sheep & Goat
