4-H Shooting Sports - Southern Regional Shooting Sports Competition and State Match
Participants from St. Martin Parish 4-H Shooting Sports headed to Lake Charles to participate in the Southern Regional Shooting Sports Competition April 24-25.
The shoot, which was held at the Lake Charles Gun Club and Burton Coliseum, was held over two days to accommodate the large number of participants. The shoot held that weekend was not only a competition but also a deciding factor in which participants would qualify to shoot at the State Match held May 1-2, 2009.
St Martin Parish now has more than 70 children who actively participate in one or more shooting sports disciplines. The parish offers Archery, BB, Shot Gun, Air Pistol and Air Rifle to any child registered in the shooting sports program. The program is run solely by volunteers and is currently thriving in our parish.
All children who participate are required to take a hunter education course and attend a two-hour safety meeting before being able to be a participant in the program. Once that is done there are three-hour practices held every other Sunday. Each participant is required to attend at least eight hours of classes before he or she is allowed to participate in any of the matches held in Louisiana.
The participants from St Martin Parish always make a good showing, and this year was no exception.

Louisiana 4-H State Shooting Sports Competition
Our St. Martin 4-H Shooters were preparing to head back to Lake Charles once
again On May 1. This time it was to participate in the 2009 4-H State Match, for the big prizes and a year’s
worth of bragging rights. St. Martin Parish is probably the parish that showed up with the most
participants overall. We have many new faces making first time appearance that left with medals
and plaques, as well as the veterans who were returning to either defend their titles or claim new
ones. Either way it was another weekend filled with fun and sportsmanship.

Dustin and Garrett actually had the same score and the winner had to be determined by how
many X’s each shooter had. In the end Garrett had 5 and Dustin had 2 which gave Garrett the

SENIOR RECURVE NATIONALS ROUND
This is a new division that started this year. The purpose of this division is to make sure the
participants are ready to compete in Nationals Competition being held in Grand Isle Nebraska in
June of 2009. The course requires the shooters to shoot distances of up to 60 meters in Field and
Fita at known distances and a round of 3-D where the distances are not marked and it is up to
the shooter to judge the distance and make his or her shot. If the animal is hit in what is
considered a non-vital area the shooter must take a (-5) as the score for that animal. This is a very
challenging round and MUST be shot to be considered for a spot on the Nationals Team!
