St. Martin Parish seventh- and eighth-grade 4-H members participated in the south central region’s 4-H Challenge Camp held at the LSU AgCenter's Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center near Pollock, La., April 15-17, 2009. The theme for this leadership experience was “What Can Green Do for You?” which encouraged participants to think more about the environment. The goal of the camp was to challenge the participants to set high personal goals as a result of activities designed to develop a positive self concept and interpersonal relationship skills while enhancing their communication skills.
The activities included outdoor and indoor challenges, a boat building contest, several environmental activities and a service learning project which involved collecting recyclables and using some of the items to make recyclable art. More than 175 4-H members from the following parishes participated: Ascension, Assumption, Iberia, Iberville, Lafayette, Lafourche, Pointe Coupee, St. James, St. Martin, St. Mary, Terrebonne, and West Baton Rouge. Rebecca Clark and Melinda Tauzin helped to chaperone the St. Martin Parish delegation along with 4-H agent Hope Guidry. Junior Leaders who served as counselors for this camp were Kelli Cantu and Jacob Albert.
