MEET THE FUTURE

National 4-H week is October 4-10, 2009. Ever wonder what the future will look like? Just take a look at your local 4-H today. It’s where young people explore, learn and discover in a safe environment. In 4-H, kids find their true passions, gain confidence and give back to the community.

In St. Martin Parish we are asking our school clubs to “Paint the School Green” with a 4-H spirit contest. The winner receives the 4-H spirit stick for the entire year as well as bragging rights. The winner will be announced in next month’s newsletter along with pictures.

OFFICER TRAINING WORKSHOP

Join us on a Walk Down the Red Carpet to Success!

4-H Club officers have all been “nominated” to attend an officer training workshop to learn how to become awesome leaders in their clubs! It is important for officers to attend one of these “screening” workshops. Parents are invited to attend. Get your “tickets” from your 4-H Club leader!
Choose the location of the screening that is most convenient for you.
Screening Sessions:
Screening # 1 - October 19, 2009-4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the 4-H office (114 Courthouse St., Breaux Bridge, La. 70517)
Screening # 2 – October 20, 2009-4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Trinity Catholic Lower Campus Cafeteria (St. Martinville)

Bring your ticket from your club leader! Or you may have to wait at the door!

Catch Phrase for 4-H Camp” Contest

What’s a good theme for 4-H summer camp? Send us your most creative ideas for a slogan -- in seven words or less and a picture illustration.

The contest is open to all 4-H Club members. The winning slogan will be one that is brief and “catchy,” capturing the spirit of
4-H Camp Grant Walker. The slogan will be used on all publicity for camp and on the camp T-shirt. The winner will receive a monetary award from the LAE 4-HA (Louisiana Association of Extension 4-H Agents).
Think fast – the deadline is October 26, 2009.

Submissions must also include the following:
Full name and age of person submitting the slogan
Parish/4-H Club
Complete mailing address
Telephone number

Contest entries will be judged by the LAE4-HA Ways and Means Committee and the 4-H camp staff. After final selection, the winner will be notified and asked to sign a release for the slogan to be used in all publicity for the camp as well as on the T-shirt. Both the 4-H’er and parent/guardian must sign the release.

Deadline for receipt of entries is Monday, October 26, 2009.
Individuals may submit multiple entries, which may be sent together to the following:

Pull for the Ronald McDonald House…… Collect Pull Tabs from aluminum cans

It’s that time again! Each 4-H Club is asked to collect pull tabs. Pull tabs can be turned in to the 4-H office by the March 29 deadline. The Junior Leader Club members will weigh the collections to determine which school has the honor of collecting the most. Results will be announced at Achievement Day.

Can you beat last year’s record? Last year we collected over 800 pounds of aluminum tabs, which equals over 1 MILLION tabs!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!

Why Pull Tabs?
This little tab you use to pull open your can of soda can make a significant impact on the Ronald McDonald House of Memphis. The aluminum can is valuable, but the tab is made of a purer, higher-grade aluminum. It is cleaner to collect than the cans and takes up less space. You could actually pull the tab off for the Ronald McDonald House and then recycle the entire can for yourself or another charity.
What is the Ronald McDonald House?

The mission of the Ronald McDonald House in Memphis is as follows: Ronald McDonald House is a “home-away-from-home” for families who are in Memphis while their child is receiving treatment for cancer or another catastrophic illness at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital. All families stay completely free of charge.
For more information about Ronald McDonald charities you can visit their website at www.rmhmephis.org
This is a perfect opportunity to offer your “hands to larger service”.

This year we are focusing on keeping you SAFE!

This month’s club meeting topic: Internet Safety
This month at your club meeting, Ms. Laura and Ms. Hope will be talking about Internet safety and how you can protect yourself on the Internet.

Know your online rules for safety:
1-I will tell an adult I trust if anything makes me feel scared, uncomfortable or confused
2-I will ask my parent or guardian before sharing my personal information
3-I won’t meet in person with anyone I have first “met” online

Halloween Safety Tips

Here are a few tips to help you protect your family at Halloween:

  • Carry a working flashlight. Small kids may enjoy having their own “glo-stick” to carry or wear.
  • There should be an adult or parent trick or treating with the children.
  • Older children should travel in groups. Never alone!
  • Stay in familiar neighborhoods.
  • Be aware of costumes that are not flame retardant.
  • Costumes should fit, making sure it won’t cause tripping or injury.
  • Also wear clothing with reflective marking
  • Accept treats only in the doorway. Never go inside a house.
  • Don’t play near lit jack-O-lanterns.
  • Be sure to say thank you for your treats.
  • Don’t eat treats until your parents have checked them.
  • Don’t walk between cars.
  • Only visit homes that have an outside light on.
  • Avoid petting animals without asking first.

Welcome to our new 4-H Club in the parish.

Breaux Bridge Primary third grade Cloverbuds and their new leader Ms. Belote.

We hope you have FUN in 4-H this year!
