2009 St. Mary Parish 4-H Fashion Revue Contest

GENERAL CONTEST INFORMATION

*Please make note of the contest and rule changes.

CONSTUCTION JUDGING AND OUTFIT APPROVAL – MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2009
. Construction judging will take place before the contest (November 30 – December 9). You may pick up your outfit on December 9.

APPEARANCE JUDGING, STYLE SHOW AND AWARDS: THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2009, FRANKLIN RECREATION CENTER, FRANKLIN - Appearance judging takes place behind closed doors. Contestants will model their garments for an appearance score which will be added to their construction score. The Style Show will begin once the appearance judging is complete. Contestants must participate in the Style Show. Contestants need to arrive at the recreation center by 5:00 p.m. to change into their garments. The appearance judging will begin at 6:00 p.m. Depending on the number of clothing contestants, the style show will begin approximately one hour after the judging begins. Parents and guardians are free to drop their child off at the recreation center by 5:00 p.m. and return for the Style Show around 7:00 p.m.

The total score (construction and appearance) will determine placing. In the Senior Division the highest scoring individual in each category will be asked to represent St. Mary Parish at 4-H University held at LSU in Baton Rouge in June. *The Ready to Wear Contestant will need to purchase a new outfit for 4-H University.



RULES


  1. Elementary and Junior contestant may enter one garment. Senior contestants may enter a recycled garment and one traditional garment. The contestant must do all the sewing and construction on the garment herself/himself. Any contestant entering a store bought garment will be disqualified (exception-Ready to Wear Category in the Senior Division).
  2. Sewn garments will be judged on construction as well as appearance for the total score. Ready to Wear outfits will be judged on appearance, fit and suitability for the occasion purchased for.
  3. Fabric of outer garment may be of any fabric type. Interfacing, lining and trim should be of compatible fabric.
  4. Make sure your garment meets the division requirements and that you are competing in the correct grade group.
  5. Each contestant is to complete and return the attached contestant information sheet.    (We have eliminated the detailed data sheets to simplify participation in the contest.)



AWARDS

  1. The Recycled Category (6th—12th grades) will feature a special 1st Place award to be revealed at the contest as well as a 2nd Place Ribbon, a 3rd Place Ribbon and Blue Ribbon Groups.
  2. All other categories (Example 4th grade ) will award a 1st Place Medallion a 2nd Place Ribbon, a 3rd Place Ribbon and Blue Ribbon Group Ribbons.
  3. The Elementary Division (if there are 3 or more contestants) will select one Overall Winner who will receive a Sewing Basket.
  4. The Junior Division (if there are 3 or more contestants) will select one Overall Winner who will receive a Sewing Machine.
  5. The Senior Division will select one Overall Winner (If there are 3 or more contestants) from the sewing categories who will win a sewing machine.



CONTEST DIVISIONS (*Note the changes)

*NOTE—There must be at least three entries in a division for an Overall Division winner to be chosen.

ELEMENTARY DIVISION - 4th - 5TH GRADES

Categories

4th Grade - Drawstring apron, cobbler’s apron, any other apron. (Patterns are available in the 4-H office)
5TH Grade - Easy skirt or any other skirt. (Easy skirt pattern is available in the 4-H office.)

JUNIOR DIVISION – 6TH AND 7TH GRADES

Categories

6th Grade - Shorts and a shirt or jiffy skirt and a shirt. (When buying a pattern, look for “Easy to Sew”, “Jiffy”, “Fast & Easy”, or “Learn to Sew”.)
7th Grade - Any complete outfit - a dress, pantsuit, skirt and top, etc. for girls; slacks and a shirt for boys. The outfit can be for any occasion. Pajamas/sleepwear ARE NOT ALLOWED.

SENIORS - 8th – 12th GRADES - MUST BE 13 YEARS OF AGE BY JANUARY 1, 2009

Categories

*****New Recycled Garment - A one piece (Shorts, Skirt, Pants, Blouse) garment made from recyclable materials or reused materials that otherwise would be thrown away or recycled. (Example: Aluminum foil, Newspapers, Tissue Paper, Capri Drink Packages, Kool-Aid Packages, food package labels, etc.) Recycled fabric may be used for a lining only.

Materials used in the construction of garments MUST be post-consumer, post-industrial, or post agricultural waste. Designers may use materials for construction such as glue, tape, dyes, marker, staples, thread, zippers, elastic, wire, Velcro, boning, buckram, grommets, laces, starch, paint, etc. Recycled fabric may only be used as a lining that doesn’t show. The usage of new material should not overpower your total garment. Garments must be constructed well enough to fit the model and hold together for the rehearsal and stage show. Be prepared for your designs to be repairable at the show in an emergency situation.

Traditional Categories

Casual wear – a complete outfit (dress, skirt and top, shorts and top, pants and top, jumpsuits for girls, slacks and shirt for guys). Category does not include any formal wear.
Special occasion wear - must be suitable for special occasion (prom, church, wedding, interview outfit or dinner date/dance.)
Ready to Wear - includes any outfit for any occasion that was selected for $100 or less. Model outfit with accessories and judge one class of clothes.
Creative choice - must turn 14 years old or older by January 1, 2010. Construct a complete outfit that includes a minimum of 5 design/construction features selected from the list below.

  1. Tailored outfit with bound buttonholes and/or tailored collar.
  2. Collar or other neckline treatment-other than plain, faced edge.
  3. Creative stitchery - appliqué, patchwork, embroidery, quilting, beading, etc.
  4. Design that must be matched-plaid, print, stripe.
  5. Gathers, ruffles, flounces, pleats or tucks.
  6. Handmade accessory.
  7. Lining.
  8. Special seam - flat felled, French, lingerie, etc. (any except finishing edge of a plain seam).
  9. Trim or decorative - top stitching, braid, insertion, trim, etc.
  10. Use of unusual fabric - pile, napped, sheer, lace, light weight knit, etc.
  11. Worked on two or more fabrics of different weights or textures (not including underlining, interfacing, and lining).
  12. Color blocking use in design.
  13. Unusual or self-created design.
  14. Two or more coordinated garment pieces for mix and match.
  15. Garment details of unusual size or shape (ex., curved French cuffs).
