St. Mary 4-H'ers Community Service Project - Ronald McDonald House
[Image: image of 4-H'ers at Ronald McDonald House]St. Mary Parish 4-H'ers participated in a yearlong pop tab collection as part of a community service project that provided help for a nonprofit organization, the Ronald McDonald House in New Orleans.
The tabs are made of pure aluminum, unlike the rest of the can which contains paint and other residue. Proceeds from the tabs generate funds that help the Ronald McDonald House operate. The proceeds do not support medical treatment of any kind; they do support the operation of the house where families and youth can stay while receiving medical treatment in a nearby hospital.
In June, a group of the St. Mary Parish 4-H Junior Leaders visited the Ronald McDonald House in New Orleans where they delivered the tabs and were also able to tour the house and learn more about the great services it provides. The Junior Leaders also enjoyed a New Orleans style lunch and visits to the Cabildo and St. Louis Cathedral. The day ended with the traditional coffee and beignets at Cafe'du Monde.
Eighteen St. Mary Parish 4-H school clubs and members-at-large were part of this yearlong effort that yielded 600 pounds of soda can tabs. At the end of the year, the top 4-H Club, Baldwin Elementary, was treated to an ice-cream party.
The top five schools collecting pop-tops were:
1st Place - Baldwin Elementary. 8 members collected 29 pounds = 3.625 poundss per member. 2nd Place - Berwick Elementary. 83 members collected 155 pounds = 1.867 pounds per member. 3rd Place - Bayou Vista Elementary. 58 members collected 94.5 pounds = 1.629 pounds per member. 4th Place - Wyandotte Elementary. 45 members collected 68 pounds = 1.511 pounds per member. 5th Place - Stephensville Elementary. 14 members collected 14.6 pounds = 1.432 pounds per member.
Why not be a part of this great project! Next time you are throwing an aluminum can away, please take a minute to pull the tab and save it. Bring your tabs to the 4-H office, Third Floor of the St. Mary Parish Courthouse, or any St. Mary 4-H'er. We will accept collections throughout the year and then deliver them at the end of the next school year. This is a great way to think of others and give back to the community and those who need our help.
