St. Mary 4-H'ers Celebrate National 4-H Week

4-H is a community of young people across America learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. 4-H programs are implemented by the Land-Grant Universities and the Cooperative Extension System through local extension offices. In Louisiana we are proud to have an extension office of the LSU AgCenter in every parish.

National 4-H Week is the annual celebration of the 4-H youth development program.  This year it will take place from October 4 through October 10, 2009.

St. Mary Parish 4-H’ers in grades four through seven will highlight this celebration by attending a 4-H Dance Saturday, October 10, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Centerville High School. Because 4-H is “Going Green” we invite fourth- through seventh-grade 4-H members and their guests to come dressed in green and white, including their hair, or just come to have fun at this event.  As the St. Mary Parish 4-H Junior Leader program is focusing its community service to help the Ronald McDonald house in New Orleans this year, 4-H’ers and their guests who bring one nonperishable item to donate to this great cause will receive a reduced price on their entrance ticket to the dance. (Click image of flyer for more information).

Another highly anticipated event of the week is the 4-H National Youth Science Day, which brings together millions of youth to participate in the National Science Experiment. This year’s experiment, Biofuel Blast, will introduce youth to alternative energy. The St. Mary Parish 4-H program will feature this experiment at the annual 4-H Fun Day scheduled for November 7, 2009, at LaGrange Elementary.
