Lab Testing through LSU AgCenter

The LSU AgCenter offers diagnostic tests for farmers and home gardeners on a variety of samples, including soil, plant tissue, nematodes and diseases, through the Soil Test and Plant Analysis Lab (STPAL).  Simply follow the instructions below to collect your sample, then bring the sample to be tested into one of our parish offices, along with a check made payable to:  Agronomy STPAL.   In St. Mary Parish the LSU AgCenter Extension Office is located at 500 Main Street, Room 314, Franklin (Courthouse).   The results will be mailed to you 10-14 days after receipt by LSU, Baton Rouge, along with recommendations for correcting any problems.

If you wish to mail samples of soil, potting mixes, water or plant tissue yourself, collect the samples by following the instructions listed below, print and complete the request form, and then mail the form, sample and your check (see form for fees) to the address listed on the form.

Soil Samples:
To obtain an analysis of the soil in your garden, flower bed, field or orchard, collect at least one pint of soil in a one-quart sealable plastic bag. Small amounts collected throughout the area to be tested are more accurate than sampling from one spot.  Include a completed copy of the Soil Test Request Form.  Indicate what the soil will be used to grow. You will have better results by being specific (see page 2 of Soil Test Request Form).

Potting Mixes, bark, etc.:
Collect at least one pint of mix in a one-quart sealable plastic bag. Use the Potting Mixes Test Request Form.

Plant Tissue Analysis:
A plant analysis provides a diagnosis of nutrient deficiency, toxicity or imbalance. It is a supplemental tool to soil testing. Collect the youngest but fully mature leaves that are not soiled, diseased or insect or mechanically damaged.  Do not use dry or dead tissue.  Collect these samples in a paper bag (no plastic bags). Use the Plant Tissue Test Request Form.

Water Samples:
This test is used for agriculture or aquaculture purposes. Use a clean bottle for the sample. For a well sample, run water through the lines for at least five minutes before taking the sample. For pond, river or stream sample, do not take a sample near the edge. Make sure the sample is free from floating trash such as leaves, weeds, etc. Use the Water Test Request Form.
