[Image: deer]Typically most of my calls at the office involve some disease, insect or weed problems. Most often these problems are related to plants. However, there is one more group of problems that can cause damage to plants. These come from the animal kingdom -- armadillo, beaver, deer, skunk, bats, raccoon, nutria, rats, mice and of course the infamous squirrel.
Each of these varmints can dig up, chew, nibble and gnaw most any plant in our yards from the lowest ground cover to the tallest tree. Many times they are not evident until the homeowner takes a close look at the landscape only to discover missing fruit, berries, flowers or bark.
The most-destructive animal for plants (and most calls) is deer. Listed are a few deer-resistant plants. Keep in mind, however, when native selection isn’t available, these plants become the menu. There are many, and these are few to consider.
Deer-Resistant Plants:
- Trees - Pine, Bald Cypress, Dogwood, Crape Myrtle, Beech, Live Oak and Loquat.
- Shrubs - Angels Trumpet, Eleagnis, Holly, Mandina, Ti, Sweet Olive and Wax Myrtle.
- Bedding Plants - African Daisy, Begonia, Dusty Miller, Calla Lily, Lamb’s Ear and Lily of the Nile.
Remember, wildlife that we see are not invading our homes and landscapes. We are in their home (habitat).
