Hostess for the meeting was Fay Ruth Hancock. President Sandra Madere opened the meeting and Vice President Joy Munch lead the chapter in prayer and the pledge of allegiance. She also shared mistakes in church bulletins that could be taken in the wrong way, causing much laughter. Secretary Audrey Lanier called roll and read the minutes of the last meeting. Treasurer Gloria Ridgedell was ill and unable to attend the meeting. Reports by standing committees were given by their chairs. Literacy chair, Terry Voight, reported the Family Book Bag in local elementary schools seems to be a complete success, schools she has contacted have reported the children are enthusiastic and parents cooperative returning the bag timely. The Character Critters! Program at North Tangi Head Start and O W Dillon School is at the halfway point, and is being well received by the students and teachers. A total of 50 books were delivered to the Book Nook at the Family Support Office in Amite and 25 to the Pediatric Department at Lallie Kemp Hospital in Ponchatoula for the children to take home free. Terry delivered 300 Box Tops for Education and 325 Community Coffee labels to Loranger Elementary School for their use for equipment for the children. Terry also reported the Dairy Farmers of Louisiana donated cups promoting their program, “Milk the Original Energy Drink” to the Family Book Bag project. These were given to the children participating in the program at Christmas filled with goodies as a small gift from the Bee’s. Also donated during January were 25 “ouch dudes” and 50 “stuffies” to the Emergency Room at North Oaks Hospital. Environmental Chair, Martha Tausch, reported on the collection of Christmas trees in Tangipahoa Parish through January 14th at five locations in the parish. These trees will be used to help control coastal erosion and restore wetlands, vital to our hurricane protection. She also reminded everyone to continue to recycle whenever possible, glass, aluminum, tin, and plastic is collected every Saturday morning in Hammond, newspaper in Amite any time, and plastic bags can be dropped off at any Wal-Mart Store in the lobby.
