Vegetable Field Day Results
The LSU AgCenter, LaTerr Master Gardeners and USDA Sugarcane Research Station personnel completed a very successful Vegetable Field Day on June 20, 2009. Over 200 people were in attendance to view the homeowner varieties of vegetables planted at the USDA Station.
Data from the varieties of tomatoes (not replicated research) indicated that the following five varieties produced the most tomatoes. They were Delicious, Mountain Spring, Mountain Fresh, Jubilee (orange) and Italian Ice (white round cherry tomato) at this site. The tomato varieties that produced the least were Green Giant, Pink Belgium and Early Girl. The first variety to reach harvest was Black Krim and Parks Whopper was the last. Just wanted to pass this on about the varieties.

Lawn and Insect Killer
This is a fairly new product for lawns and gardeners. It is called Ortho Max Lawn and Garden Insect Killer. It has a large list of insects that it kills listed on the label. This is a good homeowner insecticide. As with all pesticides, read and follow the label directions.

Insects In and Around Home
I have been receiving a lot of calls about insects and insects been brought to the office to identify. Examples have been ants, casemaking cloths moths, and spiders. One reason has been the weather. We had hot, dry weather for so long and now we are getting the rains and insects are appearing in homes and buildings. If you have an insect that needs to be identified in and around your home, you can bring it in to my office and I will identify it or send it to LSU to be identified.
