When should I water my lawn and landscape?

Question: We have been missing the rainfall recently. When should I water my lawn and landscape?

Answer: A general rule of thumb to remember for proper watering is to apply water when you do not receive one inch of rainfall per week. This is especially true when many plants and turf-grasses are growing rapidly. You can put down a few bowls or containers to help you determine the rate of irrigation and move the sprinkler when one inch collects in them. This is an easy way to determine how long it takes to deliver one inch of irrigation. Keep in mind that you need to water deeply and infrequently to help your plants develop a deep root system. Do not water daily for 5-10 minutes, as this stimulates a shallow root system.
