National “Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day” was observed Saturday, October 3, at D’Arbonne State Park. The event was coordinated by the LSU AgCenter and Lake D’Arbonne State Park.
Jon Witherington, event coordinator, expressed his appreciation to Community Trust Bank, Marion State Bank and Wal-Mart in Farmerville and Ruston for donating bicycles for the annual event. Drew McDonald and Matt Boyter, employees of The Bike Source in Monroe, conducted bicycle safety checks for each youngster. Louisiana State Police Troop F provided safety helmets and a “Bicycle Safety Tips and Louisiana Law” brochure for each participant.
Union Parish 4-H agent Carol Remy presented each contestant a participation certificate, and the winners of each event received either a gold, silver or bronze medal. The winners were:
In the nine years old and older division Gabe Ogden placed 1st in the Trail Race; 1st in the Slow Race; 2nd in the Ball on the Cone Obstacle Course; and 1st in the Cone Weave. David Rhodes placed 2nd in the Trail Race; 3rd in the Slow Race; 1st in the Ball on the Cone Obstacle Course and 2nd in the Cone Weave. Grace Nyegaard placed 3rd in the Trail Race; 2nd in the Slow Race; 3rd in the Ball on the Cone Obstacle Course and 3rd in the Cone Weave.
In the eight and under division Sydney Brown placed 1st in the Slow Race; 3rd in the Ball on the Cone Obstacle Course and 1st in the Cone Weave. Nicholas Hatchett placed 2nd in the Slow Race, 1st in the Ball on the Cone and 2nd in the Cone Weave. Sam Ganey placed 3rd in the Slow Race and 2nd in the Ball on the Cone.
4-H Junior Leader Bethany Rhodes assisted with registration and served as recorder. Others attending were Caitlyn Hatchett and Milan Witherington.
