2009 Bi-Parish Horse Show, SW District Horse Show and State Horse Show

It is time for us to start thinking about the summer fun for all of our horse show contestants. We have some exciting things for you and your horse to come and be a part of this year. Our Bi-Parish Horse Show is set for Friday, June 19, 2009. It will be held at the Covered Arena in DeRidder beginning with registration at 4 p.m. show will start at 6 p.m. The Southwest District Horse Show is set for Monday-Tuesday, June 29-30, at the West Cal Arena in Sulphur. The State Horse Show is set for July 7-11, 2009, at the Ike Hamilton Center in Monroe. The Southwest District Horse Show is a qualifying event to attend the State Horse Show. 

I will need a copy of your registration papers or the Grade Horse Certificate in my office by Friday, June 12, 2009. Please make sure the date recorded on the grade horse forms and any letter related to possession is prior to or on April 1, 2009. Entry forms and copies of registration papers must be given to me prior to the Bi-Parish Horse show. SW District Horse Show entries along with $10.00 per roping class fees are due in the Vernon 4-H Office by Friday, June 12, 2009. If a horse is registered, it must be registered in the exhibitor's name or in an immediate family member's name (father, mother, stepparent, brother, sister, legal guardian, stepbrother, stepsister, or grandparents). If the horse is owned by an immediate family member, a written statement signed by the owner and exhibitor must accompany the copy of registration or grade papers stating that the exhibitor cares for and shows the horse with the owner's permission for the exhibitor to show the horse. The location of the horse during the show season (April 1-August 1) must be specified on the written statement. I need a copy of your grade horse or registration papers for each horse you will enter this year.

The Bi-Parish Horse Show will be held in DeRidder this year at the Beauregard Civic Center Covered Arena located on Hwy. 190 West of DeRidder. The event will take place on Friday, June 19, 2009. The registration will start at 4:00 p.m. with the show starting promptly at 6:00 p.m. Please get to the show early and get signed up. Entry fee will be $5.00 for non-cattle classes and $10.00 for cattle classes. Helmets must be worn in all speed event classes.

The District Horse Show will be held at the West Cal Arena in Sulphur, La. on June 29-30.  I will need the entry forms and entry /roping fees back in my office or handed to me by Friday, June 12, 2009. At the District Show, the only fees will be a $10.00 entry fee for the roping events entered for each horse. This is due along with your entry form. If you are staying in Sulphur you will need to contact the West Cal Arena by Friday June 19, 2009 to make stall and camper reservations. The number is (337) 528-9378. There will be a fee charged for both stalls and camper fee.

The State Horse Show is set for July 7-11, 2009 at the Ike Hamilton Expo Center in Monroe. The State Horse Show Schedule and rules may be obtained by visiting http://www.agctr.lsu.edu/Inst/Extension/livestockshow/catalogues.html web site. State Horse Show Rules will apply to the district show. The District show is a qualifying show just like the Spring District Livestock Show. Your horse must place in the upper 75% of its class in order to qualify to attend the State Horse Show. At District and State Horse Show you must bring proof of a negative coggins test within 12 months and if you are going to stay overnight you must also bring a current set of health papers. There will also be an entry fee for the State show as well. Additional Entry fees will be accessed upon arrival at the State Horse Show. These fees will need to be paid at the Show Office when exhibitors pick up their show numbers. Entry fees for the State show are as follows: Entry fee (per class) $10.00, Stall fee (horse and tack) $15.00 per day, Cattle charge (roping and team penning classes) $15.00. Bedding will not be furnished at the state horse show. Exhibitors should bring their own bedding materials to the show. 
One LSU entry form per horse entered must be completed. Please pay attention to the Louisiana Horse Health requirements. It is the parent and exhibitors responsibility for follow these health requirements. All horses attending show and events must follow these criteria. Each horse participating in the event must meet federal and state quarantine and interstate regulations. Each horse participating in the event must have a Health Certificate. Each horse must have the original official health certificate signed by a USDA accredited veterinarian.

Please pay close attention to the following 2009 Horse Show Rule Changes/Possession Date/Entry Requirements:

• All horses an exhibitor plans to show must be in their possession by April 1, 2009
• All grade horses must have a completed Grade Horse Certificate along with a picture of the horse by the possession date. Possession date must be on or prior to April 1, 2009.
• Papers on registered horses can be in the exhibitors name or the name of an immediate family member by April 1st
• An explanation of who is considered an immediate family member is explained in the Horse Show rule book
• Any horse that is shown and is registered in the name of an immediate family member must be documented on the State Horse Show entry form
• Exhibitors are allowed to enter multiple horses and scratch before the district horse show
• If exhibitors do choose to enter multiple horses, exhibitor must provide all required entry information for each horse entered. At the district show only one horse per class may be shown by an exhibitor.
• A hardship process is listed in the rule book for exhibitors who may need to replace their horse due to death or injury.

Rule Changes for 2009

• Start a pilot project with speed event horses (poles, barrels and stakes). If a horse qualifies in two classes at district and has previously entered and competed in the third class, but did not qualify they would be allowed to compete in the third class at the state show. The exhibitor would be required to indicate their desire at the district show to be allowed at the state show.
• Dressage will be split into two classes in 2009 , 13 & under and 14 & over
• New maneuvers will be added to the rules for the showmanship class, they include: push turn to left, turn on hind quarters, and sending the horse around you in either direction.
• A new Ground Work Class will be added to the show. Rules and a description of the class will be listed in the show catalog.
• Recommend that a clause be added to page 13 with the possession rules that “The location of the horse during the show season (April 1 – August 1) must be specified to the 4-H agent by April 1 of the show year.
• A Quiz Bowl committee was formed to revise the questions with assistance from Master Horsemen. The Jr. Master Horsemen book from AQHA is recommended as a reference source.
• Jr and Sr. Dressage and Equitation (All Ages) over fences will be added as qualifying classes for the Southern Regional Horse Show.
• Dressage will be added to the high point judged calculations. Team penning will be added to the speed events high point calculations.

I would like to wish all of you the best of luck at all to the Horse Shows this summer. Remember that all entry forms and appropriate entry fees are due to the Vernon 4-H office on or by Friday, June 12, 2009. Remember that each horse entered must have its own entry form. Remember that the possession date for all horses shown must be on or prior to April 1, 2009. Exhibitors must also provide a written statement by the owner of the horse if it is an immediate family member stating that the exhibitor has permission to use and exhibit the horse in question and indicate the location of the horse during the show season (April 1-August 1). Any dated possession information must be dated April 1 or before. Bi-Parish Horse Show entries will be taken during registration at the Show. You may pre-enter for the Bi-Parish Horse Show by filling out the  Bi-Parish Entry sheet and return it to the 4-H office by June 12th. You may add or delete classes for the Bi-Parish Show and pay entry fees at the 2009 Bi-Parish Horse Show. Entry fees there are $5.00 per class.
