Extension Forestry Booklets
Forest landowners and foresters can add reference items to their personal libraries with several new items from the LSU AgCenter. Your local county agent’s office can supply these booklets and fact sheets. They include:
- Fertilizing Southern Pine Plantations to Improve Growth and Financial Performance by Dr. Michael Blazier, Assistant Forestry Professor. Dr. Blazier describes how to evaluate forest stand conditions and how to assess nutrient needs of forest soils. He also explains how to interpret the results of a soil test, and then discusses the process of applying fertilizer to woodlands.
- Causes and Control of Wood Decay, Degradation & Stain by Dr. Todd Shupe and others. This 26-page booklet looks at weathering, decay, stains, and insects. Other topics include preservative treatments, precautions, and selection of pressure-treated wood. If you work with wood regularly, this booklet will come in handy.
- Concepts of Soil Fertility for Hunter Food Plots by Rene G. Schmit, County Agent, St. Charles Parish, is a fact sheet covering the basics including: methods for proper soil sampling, interpreting the results of a soil test, adjusting pH, lime, sulphur, and more.
- Operating a Chainsaw Safely by Dr. Cornelis de Hoop and Dr. Richard Parish. This fact sheet covers the safety issues of using a chainsaw. Loggers and arborists know the safety rules, but most other folks using chainsaws break those rules, often with dire consequences. This fact sheet will help the needless injuries from improper chainsaw use.
- Management of Recreational and Farm Ponds in Louisiana by Dr. Greg Lutz and others. This 45-page booklet covers numerous issues including: legal aspects, design and construction, habitat, water quality, species, oxygen levels, and much, much more. This booklet has been around since 2003, but has been reprinted because of popular demand.
