In 2004, legislation was passed requiring financial education in all Louisiana high schools. In response to the legislation, the LSU AgCenter formed a partnership with Louisiana Jump$tart to offer The National Endowment for Financial Education’s High School Financial Planning Program (HSFPP) curriculum at no charge for educators in Louisiana.
The High School Financial Planning Program is offered statewide each summer in nine cities. On July 9, 2009, LSU AgCenter agents Valerie Vincent, Laura Lea Perault, and Lauren Kennedy taught the North Shore session at the LSU AgCenter office in Covington. Nine educators from various institutions learned strategic tools and teaching methods for using the curriculum. The teachers indicated that they will reach approximately 700 students annually with the information gained in the seminar.
Claire Loup, the economic and financial education specialist from the New Orleans Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, and Jennifer Boggs of the Louisiana Banker's Association served as guest speakers on financial education. Loup provided detailed information on the Federal Reserve and the resources it has to offer educators and their students. Boggs stressed the importance of financial education to all.
Each participant received a 400-page teacher manual and 115-page student workbook and interactive CD with numerous teacher resources. Teachers also earn six continued learning units (CLUs) for their time spent in the workshop.
