[Image: High School Financial Plannig Program]In 2004, legislation was passed requiring financial education in all Louisiana High Schools. In response to this the LSU AgCenter formed a partnership with Louisiana Jump$tart to offer The National Endowment for Financial Education’s High School Financial Planning Program (HSFPP) curriculum at no charge for educators of Louisiana. This year we were please to add Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU), St. Tammany Center as a featured partner.
The High School Financial Planning Program is offered statewide each summer in nine cities. On July 9, 2008, LSU AgCenter Agents; Valerie Vincent, Laura Lea Perault, and Lauren Kennedy, taught the North Shore session at the Southeastern Center in Mandeville. Seventeen educators from fifteen different educational institutions learned strategic tools and teaching methods for using the curriculum. The teachers indicated that they will reach approximately 1140 students annually with the information gained in the seminar.
Stella Helluin, Director of SLU St. Tammany Center, provided a wonderful learning environment and information on other educational resources for participants. Claire Loup the Economic & Financial Education Specialist from the New Orleans Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and Jennifer Boggs of the Louisiana Banker's Association served as guest speakers on Financial Education. Loup provided detailed information on the Federal Reserve and the resources it has to offer educators and their students. Boggs gave the group insight on the current loan market and stressed the importance of financial education to all students.
Each participant received a 400-page teacher manual, a 115-page student workbook and interactive CD with numerous teacher resources. Teachers also earn 6 continued learning units (CLUs) for their time spent in the workshop.
