The Washington Parish on the Move: Healthy Living program kickoff was held the week of October 5, 2009.

The Healthy Living Program is an exciting national program that encourages residents to develop and maintain healthful, active lifestyles. The program is made possible through a grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation. The LSU AgCenter's Washington Parish 4-H and family and consumer sciences programs received grant funds to help tackle wellness issues such as nutrition, physical fitness and safety.

During the week of October 5-10, 2009, the program was launched in Washington Parish. The parish program consists of Washington Parish on the Move -- where walking clubs were formed and teams compete for incentives based on progress and participation.

Residents participating in the program have received a pedometer at no charge, as well as a tracking form and valuable information on healthy living. Don’t forget to keep track of your steps and fill out your logs. Logs are due six weeks after starting the program. The residents with the most progress will win prizes, and each member who stays on track will get incentives along the way.

A regular walking club meets at the fairgrounds (weather permitting) every Monday and Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Residents do not have to attend the scheduled walking club in order to participate in the program, however. Residents are encouraged to create walking clubs in their communities, neighborhoods, workplaces or organizations.

If you would like to participate in the program, please contact Valerie Vincent or Lacey Urick at the LSU AgCenter at 985-839-7855, and they will arrange for your participation in the program.
