Happy Birthday 4-H
[Image: centennial logo] With the start of 2008 we can officially say “Happy 100th Birthday" to 4-H. Since 1908, Louisiana’s youth have been given opportunities to become positive, productive, capable and compassionate citizens in their communities through the largest youth organization in the world known as 4-H. Louisiana 4-H is an educational program of the LSU AgCenter and is part of the National 4-H organization. 4-H is the youth development and outreach program of the nation’s largest land-grant university system.
4-H was started in Avoyelles parish in 1908 with a boy’s corn club. 4-H has come a long way over the years. Today, more than 218,000 youth along with over 9000 volunteers will celebrate the anniversary of 4-H. What once started as a boy’s corn club has developed into an organization that seeks to provide individualism to Louisiana’s youth as well as providing educational programs to teach life skills. These programs focus on science, engineering and technology, healthy lifestyles and citizenship.
There are several exciting things that are going on around the state. There will be an induction of 100 individuals into the Louisiana 4-H Hall of Fame. These 100 individuals will be recognized at special ceremonies over the next couple of months. Along with the excitement of the Hall of Fame comes the State 4-H Museum in Avoyelles Parish. The museum will be a reflection of the past 100 years of 4-H in Louisiana as well as looking forward to an eventful future. The museum is expected to open in December of 2008.
All of the major 4-H events throughout the year will have a centennial theme, including the state livestock show Feb. 9-16, 4-H Day at the Capitol on June 5, 4-H University June 17-20, and 4-H Camp from May through the summer.
West Feliciana Parish will join in the celebration by including the centennial theme in local activities, starting with the parish livestock show held January 19. Exhibits of photos of local 4-H alumni dating back to the 1930s will be featured throughout the year. West Feliciana centennial 4-H t-shirts will go on sale in February. And a big family 4-H event is being planned for the beginning of the 2008 school year.
Find out what’s going on at the state level by going to 4-H Centennial Celebration. Everyone is encouraged to be a part of the Louisiana 4-H Centennial Celebration. If you’d like to get involved in local centennial events, call the West Feliciana 4-H office at 635-3614.
