Feliciana Forestry Association Holds Annual Meeting

[Image: association presidents]The Feliciana Forestry Association held its annual meeting at the Clinton Legion Hall on January 22. One hundred forty-three members and guests enjoyed the steak supper, and guest speaker. Dr Mike Dunn, LSU AgCenter Forest Economist, gave an educational and entertaining presentation on the Status of the Forest Economy. He sub-titled his presentation ‘Economy Fall Down and Go Boom!’

Dr Dunn indicated that the housing market is down and the solid wood market too. He showed that the prices for pulpwood were still good. Dunn suggested that the long term demand for small diameter wood would be good because the emerging markets for carbon credits, fuelwood and cellulosic energy. He recommended holding off on selling sawtimber, if landowners could, and to cut it when inflation reaches 12%. He felt that pulpwood prices might decline some, but recommended that the stands be thinned when needed instead of waiting for a higher price.

New officers for 2009 are: President – Brian Cutrer, St Francisville; President-elect – Mike Salmon, Jackson; Treasurer – Mack Herrod, Clinton; Secretary – Brian Chandler, Clinton; and Past-president – Tom Manuel, Ethel. Board of Directors from East Feliciana will be David Dart, Jay Hodges, Russell Kent and Rob Ligon. The Board of Directors from West Feliciana include Brit D’Amico, Herbert Erwin, Tim Pohlmann and Matthew Reed.

Activities of the Association for 2008 included co-sponsoring the annual forestry and wildlife field day, donating an item for the Louisiana Forestry Association’s auction at their annual meeting, conducting a fall tour of Barnes Lumber, a hardwood sawmill east of Norwood, and a 2009 Florida Parishes Champion Tree Calendar was given to each member at the annual meeting.
