Winn Parish 2009 Overall Advisory
On February 17, 2009 at 5:30 pm, the Winn Parish LSU AgCenter Extension Service held their 2009 Overall Advisory meeting. Donny Moon, parish chair, welcomed the following participants: Jan Anyan, Kathy Guin, Robert Heard, Larry Kile, Bill McManus, Melinda Miles, Karen Shirley, and John Womack. The following extension staff members were also in attendance, Becky Kelley, FCS/4-H agent, Brad Barton, AWCC member and Barbara Marshall, administrative coordinator. Members unable to attend were: Crystal Evans and Vikkie LaFollette.
Donny began the meeting by stating that he would like the committee to review the findings of the three program areas, Family and Consumer Sciences, 4-H and Agricultural Advisory meetings and discuss and set up plans to meet the needs of Winn Parish stakeholders.
Donny did a review of the programming discussed at each advisory meeting. They were as follows:
Agriculture:
1. Timber Management
2. Pasture management, fertilization and varieties.
3. Invasive species
4. Water irrigation and Sparta aquifer
5. Insect control and chemical to control them
6. Getting youth involved in agriculture and small businesses
7. Square foot gardening, raised beds and victory gardening
8. Need for an agriculture day at the fairgrounds
9. Nutrition, selection and handling of livestock
10. Fielddays
11. Fairgrounds facility upgrade so more activities can be held at fairgrounds
Family and Consumer Sciences:
1. Obesity in youth and adults
2. Diet and nutrition
3. Economy – money management and financial planning and identity theft
4. Educating child care providers on discipline, nutrition and child development
5. Parenting strategies
6. Hurricane impact on state and area
4-H
1. 4-H mentoring program in reading
2. Internet safety program – schools are working with parents on this issue also
3. Character education training of older youth to teach younger students
4. Ag day was also mention for 4-H. Programs on how things were done in previous decades
5. Gardening projects at schools to incorporate math, science and etc. and implementing a master gardening program for youth.
These were the critical issues that were addressed at the three advisory meetings. Several of these focused on our national initiatives.
Donny asked the group for their comments on ideas that would further meet the needs of these issues and if they had other issues they would suggest as programming needs for our parish. The programming would go into effect July 1.
Donny ask the group if the Ag day was planned so that it correlated with the school’s GLE’s would the schools be more receptive to allowing the students attend during school time. Donny said it would take two days so that all the schools would be able to attend. It was also suggested that schools might want to start victory gardens at each school.
Robert Heard stated that the initiatives of nutrition and finance were certainly important needs for the youth and he knew that these had been addressed by the extension staff in various ways and the need continues to be important. Karen Shirley stated that the “Fats for Life” has been used in her classes and she continues to use it.
Donny stated that the Winn Extension staffs purpose is to bring LSU AgCenter research based materials to the public to educate and meet the needs of people in the parish. Programming should be of interest to get the public to attend the programs presented.
Jan Anyan stated that the schools are now required by the state to have a nutrition plan at each school. The pre-K and kindergarten schools have had this in place for snacks and meals for awhile but now this is to be in place for all schools. Jan stated that the Rapides Foundation is working with the schools to develop a nutrition plan in what they offer in the store, lunch and breakfast menus.
It was suggested that maybe a competition could be held between schools in growing vegetables. This might be incorporated during the Winn Parish fair. Older adults might be interested in volunteering to assist the youth in this project.
Larry Kile discussed forestry and invasive species. Species such as tallow and trifoliate orange are causing more problems in the forest. This causes damage to equipment and production in overall stand production. These plants reproduce rather fast due to the prolific seed production and more studies need to be made in developing an effective control for these species which will not harm existing stands of timber.
Donny stated that he appreciated the groups taking time out of their busy schedules, for their input and recommendations for programming. These suggestions will be addressed by the agents and how these ideas can best be implemented to serve Winn Parish people. Meeting was adjourned.
