The LSU AgCenter Burden Center is a member of All-America Rose Selection’s (AARS) nationwide network of approved Public Gardens. AARS Public Gardens contain a minimum of 800 rose bushes and offer special displays of outstanding new varieties chosen by AARS for their beauty, novelty and vigor. The Burden rose garden maintains an inventory of 1,500 plants representing 150 varieties, including AARS winners as far back as 1946. Starting each June, the gardens offer an exclusive preview of the coming year’s outstanding new varieties.
AARS public gardens meet strict requirements, especially in the areas of upkeep and public display. The gardens are reviewed annually to ensure that visitors continue to have an enjoyable and educational experience. The LSU AgCenter also conducts annual surveys to evaluate plants for disease resistance and overall performance in south Louisiana. Optimum times for viewing the rose garden are mid-March through April and mid-October through November. A complete list of AARS public gardens plus information on all of the award-winning roses and their care is available at http://www.rose.org.
