Approximately fifty people attended the Pecan Research-Extension Station's Annual Field Day on September 14, 2006. After welcomes and updates on the current status of the LSU AgCenter and on potential problems facing the Pecan Research-Extension Station, guests loaded onto trailers for an orchard tour.
On the tour, Dr. Charlie Graham, LSU AgCenter horticulturist, Dr. Randy Sanderlin, LSU AgCenter plant pathologist, Dr. Mike Hall, LSU AgCenter entomologist, and Dr. John Pyzner, LSU AgCenter fruit and nut extension specialist, all gave talks covering the latest orchard activities and research. Topics included the two-year-old research demonstration orchard, the new breeding and fertility orchards, crop load management, pecan bacterial leaf scorch spread and overwintering site preferences of pecan phylloxera. Updates on the Pecan Station's activites were included.
After the tour, guests enjoyed a catfish lunch provided by Shaver's Catering in Shreveport. A general meeting and a board meeting of the Louisiana Pecan Producers Association followed.
